Laguna Beach is a town in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 26,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on Santa Ana River and its namesake lagoon. The first people to live in Laguna Beach were the Tongva people who arrived in 1836. They built their first village on the present-day site of Laguna beach. In 1853, Mexican troops commanded by General Antonio López de Santa Anna burned down the village after discovering it was administrated by Indians instead of Spanish authorities they had ordered evacuated. A year later, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of a fortification wall around what is now downtown Laguna Beach and soon afterwards founded the city of Laguna Beach with its own government separate from any other within Orange County or Mexico City. In 1886, entrepreneur Jepson Gillem opened one of Southern California's earliest department stores at 7th Avenue and Broadway which became known as Gillem's Plaza until 1923 when it changed hands several times before finally being bought by Federico Garcia Lorca who renamed it Cafe Lorca and operated it until his death in 1955.
