Laguna Niguel, California is a city located in Orange County, California. The population of the city was over 197,000 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Laguna Niguel sits on the eastern edge of Irvine and its western edge lies on Harbor Boulevard between Newport Beach and Dana Point. The name "Laguna Niguel" means "salt water lagoon." In 1819, Don Miguel de la Serna y Valdez led an expedition from Mission San Gabriel to explore this new land that he had discovered in 1783 while searching for a way to find Santa Ana River. After landing at what is now Laguna Niguel and exploring some nearby hills, they named their new settlement after Captain James Cook's ship HMS Discovery which arrived in England in 1788 during his circumnavigation of America. Captain Cook sighted the Coast Range about 400 miles (650 kilometers) north of where we now stand when he sailed his Discovery eastward along Onslow Peninsula on November 12th 1789. He called it Isla de los Muertos because there were no living creatures to be seen except for seals and sea lions which he shot with his cannon since there were no natural resources hereabouts! In 1819 by virtue of consulting with Mexican officials concerning Spanish claims to this territory south of Baja California Sur (then known as Alta California), our first white male traveler - Don Miguel de la Serna y Valdez - officially proclaimed that we had found land claimed by both Spain and Mexico before him! This claim has been perpetuated ever since through various surveys including one made by George Condon who visited us in 1920! At that time we numbered just 7 people living scattered throughout these Palo Alto Hills: myself, my wife Fortunato Lopez; two Sons Santiago & Manuel Lopez; four daughters Lupe Cerda & Emilia Gonzalez; three grannies Anacleto Ramos & Concepcion Zapata; one old woman Avelina Romero! Commodore Perry's flagship USS Constitution anchored off shore on July 26th 1848!! That historic day inaugurated a era when international law applied directly to our coastlines!! Our town was founded less than 2 years later when Father Pedro Ortega organized 8 fishermen from Punta Gorda Island who came ashore seeking fresh water for their boat engines - hence "Punta Gorda Bay" became our dumping ground for all those unsightly black sludge washing up onshore !! As early as 1850-1851 Captains Waugh & Seymour explored this coastline looking for a seaport but did not find anything worthy enough to warrant further exploration so they returned home empty-handed !! Today only 3 feet (.91 meters) deep below surface ocean floor remains unconsolidated salt Marine sediments dating back more than 4 million years providing essential evidence Supporting conspiracy theorists' theories that man has caused global warming!!! When you drive along certain streets you can see evidences left by hundreds or even thousands of historical floods which have occurred cleaned up today thanks to government dredging efforts but whose impact upon our environment still looms large today ! ..... What an interesting read if you love history!!!
