The first recorded reference to fresh roasted coffee was in a document from 1292 AD that mentioned beans being roasted on the island of Jamaica. The Dutch began exporting coffee in small quantities to Europe in the 1600s and soon found themselves importing large amounts of this valuable commodity from Africa. The history of Laguna Niguel, California began with the first European settlers in 1837. The area that is now Laguna Niguel was part of Rancho Bernardo, which was granted to Isabella Maria de los Angeles by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. In 1839, the Mexican government sold the rancho to John Sutter and his brother George for $10,000. In 1850, Sutter founded the city of Sacramento on the east side of San Joaquin River. He named it after his friend and mentor—the Rev. José Gabriel García Márquez—who had recently died in California. By 1861, Sacramento had a population of over 100,000 people and was home to two colleges: Santa Clara University (established in 1795) and California State Normal School (established in 1860). Laguna Niguel became a census-designated place (CDP) on March 15, 1972.
