Since the early days of the United States Air Force, there has been a strong tradition of gifting. From pilots and airmen who have given their lives in service to our country to civilians who have shown appreciation for USAF support, there are countless individuals and organizations that have contributed to the USAF culture. One of the first gifts bestowed upon our military was an airplane. In 1941, General Hugh Arnold donated a P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft to the RAF as part of a deal that saw British pilots trained at Luke AFB in California. This gift represented an important step in American air supremacy during World War II; American planes were able to outmaneuver their enemies while they flew over Japan. The RAF continued to use US-made planes until 1945 when America entered into World War II again. With so many airplanes gifted by our military, it is no wonder why USAF aviation is one of the most well-maintained and preserved branches of our armed forces. The postwar period was also filled with donations from civilian Clearing House customers (CHs). Many CHs were dedicated solely to providing support for USAF personnel stationed abroad or conducting operations in Support Activity Areas (SAA). These types of gifts ranged from coffee cups and donuts provided by CH employees on duty at local bases all the way up to luxury travel experiences aboard USAF transports or even jets! Some famous SAA donors include Elvis Presley, James Dean, Orson Welles and Admiral Chester Nimitz! These donations not only supportedAAF personnel but also helped shape American society as we know it today. Today, we continue this tradition by giving back through gift giving both within and outside the USAF community. Just this year alone, we’ve sent more than $1 million worth of items valued at more than $10,000 each across seven different states! Laguna Woods is a small town located in Southern California. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. Laguna Woods was founded in 1891 by James Irvine and his wife, Nancie Hews Irvine. TheIrvine family built a home on what are now Rancho Laguna Seca and PCH (Pinehurst Hills Drive), which still stands today as one of Laguna Woods' most popular neighborhoods. In 1907, James's son, Michael J. Irvine, established an agricultural college in Laguna Woods that became UC Riverside after he donated land for it in 1919. Laguna Woods has been known for its dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean since its founding and its many mansions that have been used for vacation rentals and business meetings over the years. Today, much of theoriginal infrastructure remains within the town limits- including a post office, school district, fire station, police department and shopping center- making it one of the most intact communities in San Diego County while also remaining relatively affordable to live in compared to other areas around it. The growth of Laguna Woods was slow due to its location on a major shipping route between San Francisco and Oakland. Laguna Woods is located in the San Bernardino Valley of Southern California, about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. The name comes from the lagoon or lake that once surrounded the area. The first Europeans to visit Laguna Woods were Spanish missionaries in 1771, and it was not until 1823 that a permanent residentsique appeared. In 1872, John Wesley Powell discovered gold at Sespe Creek and named it Laguna Woods after him. However, it wasn't until 1863 when a real estate developer by the name of Hahn purchased land adjoining Laguna Woods for vacation homes. By 1897, over 3,000 residents had registered with the town of Laguna Beach because they liked what they saw there. In 1923, when Congress passed a bill designating Los Angeles County as an incorporated municipality within city limits, LAGUNA WOODS TOWN INC., one of the original incorporators became its first Mayoralty Officer!
