Laguna Woods, California is a small town located in Orange County, California. The population was 3,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Irvine–Irvine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Laguna Woods may come from the Lagoons of Laguna Madre and its adjacent lakes. Alternatively it may be derived from "lagoon" meaning large bay or body of water and "wood" meaning forest or woodlot. The town site was first settled in 1879 by James Sutherland and his brother-in-law John Birdseye after they arrived from England as copper miners. They named their new land "Laguna". In 1887, Mathilde de Rothschild sold her piece of property in Laguna Woods to Edwin Condon for $5,000 cash plus interest. In 1909, he donated another piece of land to the town for use as a public park and playgrounds which remain today. In 1958, Laguna Woods became an incorporated municipality with its own government including an elected mayor and City Councilors; it remained that way until 1971 when it became part of the newly created Orange County community of Irvine. After 15 years as a separate municipality, Laguna Woods merged into Irvine on Jan 1st 2007 without any opposition from residents or officials - whether this was due to annexation efforts by other municipalities within Orange County or simply because there wasn't much else left to merge into ( subsequent annexations have increased the population size by over 100%). On July 17th 2017 voters in a special election approved Measure T (also known as " Costa Mesa Tax Increase") which will raise taxes by 5%, along with funds being diverted back into general fund services like firefighting etc., to help pay for infrastructure needs including new schools and preservation initiatives at Laguna Woods since annexation has made much needed repairs necessary such as resurfacing streets etc... while also increasing economic development opportunities through job creation/ retention/ relocation
