In the early 1800s, Laguna Woods was a small, isolated community. It was known for its fruit trees and almond orchards, and for its military deployments to various wars. The town's first military deployment occurred in 1846 when it participated in the Mexican-American War. The town's second military deployment took place in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. During both deployments, Laguna Woods saw heavy fighting; however, it ultimately lost no lives. Laguna Woods has remained a garrison town throughout its history - even today, many of its residents are soldiers or Marines stationed at Fort MacArthur in Crystal City. This is due to Laguna Woods' location on the eastern edge of California's Central Valley and its close proximity to two major U.S Army bases: Fort Myer and Fort Shafter. The city of Arlington Heights also resides within easy commuting distance of Laguna Woods; as a result, many residents have been employed by these respective municipalities over the years. The name was changed to Laguna Beach in 1916, after then-Governor Manuel Cámpora assigned it to Orange County. In 1985, when Laguna Beach became part of Riverside County, Laguna Woods remained an unincorporated community with its own government. The City of Laguna Woods is located on major east-west arterial roads that connect Los Angeles and Ventura counties. It borders Interstate 10 to the south and west, and state Route 158 to the north. Downtown Laguna Woods features a series of murals depicting local history dating back to 1885. The downtown business district also includes several restaurants and bars as well as a large museum devoted to water sports and surfing culture. Laguna Woods offers a variety of activities for residents, including hiking, swimming, fishing, bird watching, golfing and skiing. There are also several parks within walking distance of downtown that include Lincoln Park (a nature Preserve), Don Mill Park/Lake Powell Reservation & Botanical Garden (a botanical gardens), Solana Beach Park & Nature Reserve (an open water park) and Point Mugu State Park (a state park).

Laguna Woods is a small, but important part of California history. The woods were once a place where people could relax and get away from it all. Today, Laguna Woods is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in California as well as some of the most prestigious homes in the state. The first Europeans to visit Laguna Woods were Spanish missionaries in 1777. From then until 1823, no humans lived in the area except for occasional visitors from Peru and Mexico. It was during this time that Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna discovered Laguna Woods while on an expedition into Southern California. After his exploration, Santa Anna decided to create a military post at what is now Laguna Woods so he could monitor Californian affairs from a safe distance. It wasn’t until 1824 that any human activity took place within the confines of present-day Laguna Woods after two French fathers, Auguste Charcot and Augustin-Marie Desmarais arrived with their families. The brothers founded what is now known as Rancho La Brea (later Yerba Buena Ranch). In 1835, they sold their land to John Sutter who began construction on his new rancho (later City of San Francisco). Bordered by Mount Diablo on one side and Point Reyes National Seashore on the other, San Francisco quickly became one of Los Angeles’ most popular tourist destinations due to its magnificent views and easy access to public transportation. Sutter also constructed much of today’s downtown including both the current US Attorney’s Office building and State Capitol Building which are both still standing today thanks to Sutter’s donations and hard work. During World War II, many Japanese Americans living in Northern California were interned at Coyote Hills Military Barracks near present day El Sobrante County seat of Hercules. Although they didn't face any combat directly during World War II, many Japanese Americans experienced harsh conditions inside Coyote Hills which included inadequate food rations and poor ventilation; these conditions eventually led to disease outbreaks among unit members over time. Although WWII ended with Japan's surrender in 1945, many questions remain about how those citizens got along without government assistance after they left our shores – such as why there aren't more evidence remaining of Japanese cultural artifacts or buildings still standing within LAGUNA WOODS TODAY!
Laguna Woods was annexed by Los Angeles County in 1907. The area now known as Laguna Woods was first settled in 1847 by Japanese Americans who built a small ranch here. In 1915, the American Tobacco Company constructed a factory in Laguna Woods and began to use the area for its cigarettes products. In 1927, the California State Legislature passed Assembly Bill No. 535 which created the Laguna Hills Recreation Area. The recreation area included much of what is now Laguna Woods. In 1932, the state legislature passed Assembly Bill No. 910 which established Park Service land within the recreation area for public use and enjoyment. In 1936, President Franklin D Roosevelt made it a national forest with passage of Executive Order 6102 which vested control of forests within each state with the National Forest Service (NFSA). Today, Laguna Woods remains part of NFSA and is one of its primary regionsserving as largely rural agricultural land adjacent to city areas around San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles County
