In 1847, American settlers began to arrive in California and founded San Francisco Bay Area. In 1861, American soldiers burned down the missions in Laguna Woods as part of their campaign against Mexico. The mission property was donated to the Catholic Church by American settlers. The first home built in Laguna Woods were two small houses near what is now Slauson Avenue and I-5 West. Over time, more homes were built and additional schools were established in Laguna Woods. By 1925, there were twelve schools in Lagunta Woods and over fifty businesses had been opened in the community. Laguna Woods is a small town located in the heart of San Francisco Bay Area. It was once a thriving citrus fruit and wine production center, but today much of its commercial activity revolves around Laguna Hills Regional Park, which is home to one of the largest public golf courses in North America. The name "Laguna Woods" may have originated with the Spanish word for "Lake" - los Lagunas - because of its sheltered location on a bend in the river that emptied into San Francisco Bay. The area was first settled by Native Americans, who built villages near what is now Laguna Woods. In 1826, Governor Manuel adjective Menéndez de Avila granted Rancho Los Algodones to José Butz as part of his purchase of Rancho Santa Clara from Mexican landowners. Butz continued to use the name "Los Algodones," even after he sold most of his land to American citizens in 1853. The first post office at Laguna Woods was established in 1867, and remained operational until it closed in 1923. After World War II, many businesses moved out of Laguna Woods due to air pollution regulations placed on California by Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program. However, many new businesses started up soon afterwards as Californians began rebuilding their communities after the war: including KFC and Pizza Hut; both opened restaurants in Laguna Hills Regional Park between 1951 and 1957. Laguna Woods experienced another boom during the 1980s when Ventura County decided to annex it from San Francisco County; this led to dramatic population growth and development along Highway 101 bordering Lacrosse Road/Upper State Route 12 (now Interstate 5) until residential areas surrounding Highway 101 were developed over much of what is now forested parkland on either side of highway: creating an almost Mars-like landscape separating two pockets – one largely bedroom community (Laguna Hills) from a higher-density residential area adjacent to Interstate 5 (the city). The growth has since slowed down somewhat as more residents move into downtown San Francisco or other major metropolitan areas within California while still keeping access to central parklands such as Laguna Hills Regional Park
Laguna Woods was founded in 1853 by Captain John F. Cook, who named the area for the lagoon near his ship, HMS Endeavour. In 1876, Laguna Woods became a census-designated place (CDP) when it was included within Los Angeles County. The population of Laguna Woods peaked at around 100 people in the 1920s but has since decreased to around 30 residents today.
