Laguna Woods is a small town in Orange County, California, United States. It is located on US-101 north of Anaheim. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. In 1903, William Randolph Hearst purchased 2,000 acres of Laguna Woods land and developed it into what is now Laguna Woods Village. Hearst named the development after his home state of California; the village became an incorporated town in 1959. Understandably, much has changed about Laguna Woods since William Randolph Hearst's purchase in 1903. Today's community takes its name from one of America's most well-known and prestigious golf courses - The Masters Golf Course - but also from other notable landmarks such as Rancho Mirage Boulevard (now called Callejon Drive), which once ran along the east side of Laguna Woods Village; and Houseboat Cove on Clearwater Beach where residents could sunbathe or relax during prohibition years. Despite these changes over time, much has stayed the same about this unique community that offers easy access to both Disneyland and OCAD University campuses by way of Interstate 10 East.
Laguna Woods is a census-designated place (CDP) in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It arises from an area of woodland and meadow that straddles the eastern edge of Laguna Beach County on the Pacific Ocean. The name "Laguna Woods" likely comes from the Muisca word "laguna," meaning "the ocean." The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish sailors who sailed up the coast in 1542 looking for a route to Asia. In 1602, Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo explored this part of California and named it San Salvador de las Pulgas (Salinas by the Penguins). The first permanent residents were farmers who grew crops and herds of cows and horses near present-day Laguna Niguel Boulevard and State Road 705. A post office was established at Laguna Woods in 1875, but it was closed by 1880 because there was no postal service in Orange County then. In 1882, three brothers - George Washington Angelou II (1857-1937), Arnold Golden (1860-1945), and Julius Ebony (1863-1935) - founded Angelone Farms on what is now Belle Isle Drive in Laguna Woods. They raised chickens and pigs, made cheese, eggs, butter, wine, flour and other goods from their farmstead until 1923 when they sold all their assets to Charles Matson Jr., son of Commodore Charles Matson Sr..
