Laguna Woods, California is located in San Luis Obispo County, California. It is a census-designated place (CDP) and has a population of 8,813 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from the Spanish word Laguna which means " inland body of water." The community was founded in 1887 by twelve men who were seeking to create a golf course on the then virgin hills that dot the south coast of San Luis Obispo County. The founders named their course Laguna de la Muerte because they believed that it would be a difficult course to lose. The first residents of Laguna Woods were German immigrants who initially set up shop near what is now East Monterey Boulevard in downtown San Luis Obispo. In 1899, two brothers, Harry and John Meier bought land east of Highway 1 and developed what became known as Rancho La Mesa. They continued to develop this area until 1925 when they sold their land to Averill Harriman for $1 million dollars. In 1927, Harry Meier died suddenly at age 53 while out playing golf with friends at Pebble Beach Golf Links; his wife took over development work on behalf of their son-in-law Harriman. By 1935, it was apparent that not enough people were living in the area so Harriman decided to sell his holdings back to his sons Harry Jr., Alvarus Jr., and Herbert for an undisclosed sum. Herbert created what is today called Harborwood Ranchos Ltd., which purchased all but 4 acres (16 hectares) of Laguna Woods CDP from Averill Harriman Ltd.. Today Harborwood Ranchos Ltd.'s property includes nearly 8 square miles (21 km2) including much of downtown San Luis Obispo and parts of eastern Santa Cruz County The original developers had hoped for a private golf club like those at Augusta or St Andrews but due to World War II rationing there weren't any such places available until after 1945 when Mandatory Flight Rules (MFR) began prohibiting open play on many country clubs across America's warring allies - England included -thus creating an opening for Laguna Woods! This allowed American expatriates living overseas military serviceleave their homes and come home to enjoy quality golf without having restrictions placed upon them like those faced by citizens on home soil during the wartime blackout period. On July 6th 1951 Sherryl Fenton opened her first restaurant inside newly renovated Chaparral Hall next door to Disneyland while still under construction - thus becoming one halfofthefirstlegalGolf CourseOpeningInAmerica! As early as 1952 transient employees working part time at various businesses within town started calling themselves "Lagunaians" as did some daycare center providers during times when outside childcare could only be found along Highway 1 or other major arterial routes within town limits! In 1957 LPGA Tour player Gene Sarazen played nine holes at Chaparral Hall before hitting practice balls off PGA TOUR member Don Rich's house into nearby Channel Islands National Monument...just three years prior! In 1957 Laguna Woods became one of twelve townships within Orange County when it was split from Newport Beach Township.
