By 1935, 12 oil wells had been drilled in and around Laguna Woods; production began in 1936 and continued until 1942 when the U.S. military closed down all offshore oil drilling because of World War II restrictions on petroleum production. The community enjoyed some success during World War II as an airbase for Lockheed Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation's L-4H bombers; however, following the war many businesses closed down due to difficult economic times. However, with new technology and investments from various investors including Coca Cola Refreshments Company and Pacific Gas & Electric Co., Laguna Woods bounced back beginning in the late 1960s thanks to its revived commercial property industry as well as new public investment such as a shopping center opened in 1984 which remains one of Orange County's most successful properties today. Today there are more than 50 businesses operating within LagunaWoods limits with an average daily business volume of $2 million! The local economy has diversified greatly since then with several major healthcare facilities being built nearby such as Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center and University Health System-Orange County campus - replacing smaller hospitals that closed between 1984 and 2002 combined! The first settler to arrive in what is now Laguna Woods was John McLaughlin who built a cabin on the now-demolished Rancho San Buenaventura in 1876. The original settlers were Irish immigrants who worked on the rancho for years before purchasing it from the Mexican government in 1887. In 1905, Capitan Juanita Shea came to Laguna Woods with her husband JB Healy to start a dairy farm. They used their own horses and carts to get milk to market because there was no railroad available at that time. In 1912, they started selling ice cream from their truck which became an important part of the town's economy. In 1923, Don Wilcox purchased land around what is now Myers Park which he would later turn into Laguna Woods Golf Course and Tennis Club which still functions today as one of Southern California's leading golf courses. In 1951, Fillmore Hall opened its doors as part of University of Southern California (USC) campus Expansion Project and soon became home to many notable people including President Harry S Truman and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Over time, other businesses have followed suit such as a beauty salon called LaBelle & Company which operated from 1925 until 1985; an ironmonger named Tom Kelly who operated from 1947 until his death in 1992; and finally Sunoco gas station located on Everglades Drive near US-101 that closed its doors in 2001 after over 50 years service! Today, much of what once constituted Laguna Woods' downtown has become residential or office properties while Myers Park remains open primarily for recreational purposes!
