In 1853, he organized and led an expedition to explore and map the route of the Central Pacific Mail Company's transcontinental railroad. The first United States Army deployment to California was in 1846. The 6th Infantry Regiment, led by Colonel John C. Fremont, arrived at Stockton on October 12th and began their initial training there on October 17th. They were transported to Sacramento on November 3rd for the first major engagement of the war against Mexican forces, the Battle of Rio Grande. The regiment fought heroically throughout that battle, suffering no casualties and taking two Mexican cannons into custody. On December 14th, General Zachary Taylor organized an invasion of Mexico which would culminate in the Battle of Buena Vista Hill. The regiment participated in this spectacular battle as well as other engagements during the campaign. After crossing the border into Mexico they participated in a series of marches northwestward until they reached Baja California on January 5th. Here they engaged in numerous battles before finally concluding their operations at Cerro Gordo on January 8th after successfully capturing over 100 Mexicans! On February 2nd, 1847 the regiment was ordered to Monterey Peninsula where they helped garrison that town during the winter of 1847-48. On March 20th, General Antonio López de Santa Anna attacked Monterey Peninsula with his army and although successful in achieving some initial objectives he ultimately withdrew without achieving his goals. The squadron assisted with actions near Point Cruz from May 15-1949; however no formal disbandment took place until 1951 due to budget cuts withinArmyHQ

Lake Elsinore is a large, artificial lake in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. It was created by the construction of Alpine Dam in 1907 and forms part of the San Joaquin River Basin. The dam is about 120 miles long and 15 miles wide at its widest point. It is high enough to create a height difference between water levels on two sides of the lake, letting farmers irrigate their crops while also providing power for local businesses and homes. The dam has been used for both recreation and irrigation since it was built, but it has become increasingly difficult to maintain due to its complex engineering and maintenance requirements. The first Europeans to visit Lake Elsinore were Spanish explorers José Garzón and Antonio de Haro in 1769-1770, who named it "Los Silvios" after an Alisal oak near present-day Yosemite National Park. In 1812, Captain John Cranch discovered gold near what is now Elsinore and decided to name the new town after his find. However, this decision was changed when word got out that General Harrison had won his famous battle at Tippecanoe against Mexico City's army under Mexican President Vicente Guerrero that year. So instead of called Garza County or Chávez County - two other Names given earlier for parts of today's Kern County - the town got its current name on November 8th 1812 when Governor Manuel De La Cuesta approved a proclamation naming it as el Sacramento del Río Arroyo Seco o el Río Arroyo Seca (the Sacramento River [El] from Yuba Creek Mouths Upstream or Sacramento River), which means "Sacramento Valley." During World War II, Lake Elsinore became one of six American military bases used by the United States during World War II; these facilities included Point Mugu Naval Air Station on southern California's central coast, Naval Supply Depot #2 at Fort Irwin on northern California's central coast, Rosarito airfield on Baja California Sur across from Carlsbad Caverns National Park south of Mexicali salt flat], Magna Carta airbase east off Interstate 5 in Phoenix suburb Glendale], Camp Pendleton inland near San Diego]], plus numerous small stations scattered throughout Southern California.]]
The Elsinore area was first settled in 1820 by the Sutro Band of Mission Indians. The town name, meaning "royal city," is derived from its location on the Elsinore River. The first post office in town was established in 1827. In 1855, it became a county seat and remained so until 1903. In 1863, California State University (CSU) was founded at what is now CSU Elsinore. The university has since grown to become one of Southern California's largest institutions with over 30,000 students and staff.
