The history of the Army National Guard in Lake Elsinore, California goes back to 1903. The first unit to be organized in this town was the 6th Infantry Regiment, which consisted of only men and boys under the age of 18. The regiment was disbanded in 1904. In 1907, a volunteer battalion of the 10th Infantry Regiment was raised and assigned to duty at Rancho San Jacinto on thegrounds now known as Golden State University. This battalion also served for two years in World War I as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. After their service, many members of this battalion returned home and were re-organized into companies within other units before being reactivated for World War II. After World War II, an all-volunteer armored cavalry brigade was activated at Camp Pendleton and stationed at Lake Arrowhead until it was disbanded in 1951. In 1966, another all-volunteer armored cavalry brigade (the 9th Armored Brigade)was activated at Camp Pendleton and stationed at Elsinore until it was disbanded in 1987. Lake Elsinore is a large artificial lake located in central California, on the border of Kern County and Tulare County. The name comes from the Spanish mission built there in 1788 as San Francisco de las Nieves. The mission was abandoned in 1821 and its land became part of Rancho Elsinore, which was granted to Fernando Ruiz y Montoya in 1848. In 1902, it became a county park. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lake Elsinore were members of the Franciscan Mission Santa Clara who landed on the north shore on July 25, 1769. The town that grew up around the mission was called simply La Jolla (the Cliff). A second group led by Captain George Vancouver came ashore about two weeks later at Point Conception (now Point Reyes) and founded Fort Vancouver on October 11th, 1770. The first people to live permanently near where today's downtown Elsinore stands were Native Americans known as the Tongva. Shelter from winter weather was available at nearby Clifton Springs and other locations before European settlement began. By 1800 they had moved out of their villages into more permanent settlements such as Red Bluff and Yucaipa Creek Valley. On February 14, 1800, General José Joaquín de Arce Mexican War Treaty was signed between Mexico and United States at Campo del Rio near modern-day ELSA Airpark in Simi Valley. As part of this treaty, Rancho Felipe Mexican land east of San Diego Bay became Ute Indian Territory ceded to America following their victory over Mexico at Pueblo del Oro during the Morelos Expedition in1819-20\. This area extended from present day Chico until southward along both shores of San Bernardino Strait to include present day Lake Elsinore including most of what is now Kern County\. It includes much Willits Canyon country which American Indians knew for hunting resources\ . In 1821 Governor Manuel Micheltorena ordered Captains Storey and Price to survey this new territory()/. They laid down three miles wide track leading northeast from Mathers Landing ()/ -to within 10 miles or so of Los Angeles()/. Afterward Lieutenant John Cushing laid out roads connecting these surveyed points with surveys made earlier by Storey(), Price(), & Clark (). maps created during this time show that areas east of Los Angeles lay within Rancho Felipe even though they would not become part Of America until after California gained statehood\ . Additional homesteading started around this time but did not reach any significant numbers until after Gold Rush era when many gold seekers turned back because there were no viable settlements close enough to mine halts
