The lake was formed when two mountain ranges collided and filled the area with volcanic ash and sediments. The name "Elsinore" comes from the Sinagoga language which means "the place that flows." Today, Elsinore is a popular tourist spot because of its many beautiful lakes, forests, and beaches. The first residents of what is now Lake Elsinore were Native Americans who hunted camels and horses in the area. In 1866, General Antonio Lomas gave orders to build a military post on the site of present-day Elsinore after discovering gold near Ruby Valley. After some construction delays, Lomas's post was finally completed in 1870 under General Ulysses S. Grant. At first it was used for military purposes only, but soon became known as "The Gilded Cage". In 1892, Governor Hiram Johnson approved plans to create a large reservoir on the east side of town for irrigation purposes. The $5 million project was finished in 1903 by Calafia Company president James Irvine. The first small batch brewers used a pot or pan to heat up water and then place the beans in it, which gave rise to the term “small-batch” coffee. The first espresso machines were developed in the early 1800s for use by baristas who wanted to make more intricate drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes. These early machines used a plunger to pull out grounds, which required time and skill to properly pour each shot. However, with time these became more common among home brewers because they allowed for greater variations in taste and aroma, giving birth to our current day espresso culture.
