Lake Forest, California is an affluent city in San Francisco County, California. It is the fifth-largest city in San Francisco and the largest of its nine local districts. The population was 763,651 as of 2018 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The city spans 8 square miles (21 km2), with a total area of 9 square miles (26 km2). Founded by Don Menzel in 1887 as a small farming community on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay, Lake Forest became world-renowned for its mansions and golf courses during the Progressive Era and subsequent decades as one of Northern California's leading financial centers. Today, Lake Forest remains a highly selective enclave withinSan Francisco surrounded by dense housing estates and old industrial areas that are home to some of Silicon Valley's most high-profile companies and entrepreneurs. The first inhabitants were Native American tribes who lived near Lakeshore Avenue and Mission Street before European settlement began. Lake Forest is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 24,871 at the 2010 census. The city was founded on July 20, 1888 by George Pullman and his family as a new town on the east side of San Pablo Bay. It became an incorporated city on November 5, 1912. In 1978, Lake Forest merged with Walnut Creek to form the largest local government consolidation in California history. The City of Lake Forest has jurisdiction over all of Contra Costa County including portions of Alameda and Napa Counties neighboring it to the south and east. The first Europeans to visit what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish explorers who set out from Mexico in 1769 for what is now Orange County and named it after Saint John's River where they located a mission called Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Our Lady of Deliverance). After finding no evidence that this hypothetical shrine existed they abandoned their search for weeks before finally returning toMexico in early 1770 with some supplies and four horses. In spring 1846 Jerald Ralston discovered gold near Sutter's Mill while prospecting for copper in promoter Gulick’s Gold Rush District but only yielded 3 ounces (91 milliliters) worth of gold per day when struck at various points along strike boundaries; he realized then that he had been misled by his team leader about the quality of the ore being found nearby. A claim upon these rich resources was patented by George Pullman Jr under US Patent No 614227 dated April 1st 1850 covering an additional three-quarters mile extending due west along strike line extending northeasterly up Trinity creek past present-day Antioch into southeastern Napa County (& underlying surface strata 10 feet thick), thence easterly across Taylor Road W., inside Mission creek watershed unto its confluence w/Hwy 101E & Ygnacio Valley Rd., thence northeasterly across Hwy 101E & Ygnacio Valley Rd., up said creek bed inside Mission creek watershed thru TaylorRoadWashmgt&insideMissionscreekWastewater System&intoNapaCounty
Lake Forest was founded in 1821 by James Sutter and his family. The original site of the city was located on the upper reaches of the San Joaquin River. The first permanent settler in what is now Lake Forest was John Sutters, who arrived in 1825. In 1828, Sutters purchased 4,000 acres (16 km²) of land at the mouth of the Chicago River from David Starr Jordan for $2,500. On July 7, 1830, Sutters and his wife Anna built a farmstead on this tract which they named after their daughter Louisa. The city grew rapidly during its early years and by 1840 had a population of 100 people. That year it became part of Contra Costa County and under its new municipal government it began to enjoy more autonomy than other towns within county limits. By 1850 Lake Forest had a population of 3,,200 people; it remained an important agricultural center until after World War II when factories took over much of the town's economy. In 1865–1966, Lake Forest played an important role in helping to organize California's vaudeville industry through its own theater district called The Stripes
