The National Guard was first organized in 1903 as the California Highway Patrol. The organization grew rapidly during World War I and, in 1917, it was renamed the National Guard of America. During World War II, the National Guardsmen served in many countries including the United States. In Lake Forest, California, they were called to duty on September 11th, 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The Guard responded quickly and successfully with their distinctive blue and gold uniforms and drills. Today, the National Guard provides a vital service to our country and is an important part of our community. The Lake Forest National Guard was founded on Dec. 15, 1923, in response to the Spanish-American War. The first unit was organized at 7th Street and Walnut Avenue in downtown Lake Forest. The guard patrolled the streets and streets of town until 1926 when it moved to 17th Street and Wabash Avenue. In 1927, the guard began providing protection for schools in the town. It also provided firefighting services from 1933-1935 and 1940-1945. In 1951, the national guard became a part of the United States Army Forces Far East (USAAFFE). During World War II, members of the Lake Forest National Guard served with distinction in both Europe and Asia. After World War II ended, many Guardsmen decided to stay in the United States as civilians and were reorganized into battalions under command of Air Force generals who oversaw all military aspects of their battalion's activities including procurement, organization, training and deployment; this gave rise to what is known as battalion brigades today which are Essentially subordinate commands reporting directly to an air force general commanding all UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) throughout DoD missions worldwide

One of the first things Congress did when it was formed was to create the National Guard to help ensure national defense. The Guardsmen were given the power to act as bodyguards for members of Congress and other high-ranking officials. In 1868, President Andrew Johnson established military units dedicated to civil defense purposes which became known as the National Guard Bureau (NGB). This organization responsible for training, arming, and equipping both State militias and private companies into self-reliant militia formations1. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established the Service Civilian Conservation Corps (SCC) which became known as the National Guard Service2. The purpose of SCC was to provide jobs for civilians during World War I while also providing service in law enforcement, firefighting, forestry, public works, and ambulance service3. In 1932, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created what is now known as FEMA4 with the goal of creating a national preparedness program that could respond quickly to any emergency situation5. The firstorganized unit within FEMA was called “the Military Armada”6 which consisted only of soldiers from states that had declared war on Japan7. Over time more organizations have been added including: Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Department Of Justice (DOJ), Social Security Administration (SSA), Food And Drug Administration (FDA), Department Of Homeland Security (DHS)8; all working together towards one common goal9- helping prevent or recover from any type of disaster10.
