The United States Navy has a long and rich history in Lake Forest, California. The first naval base in the area was set up on Monterey Peninsula in 1851. The Naval Station at Monterey became the center of naval activity for the entire San Francisco Bay Area after it opened in 1853. In 1903, the Naval Station at San Diego was relocated to San Bernardino County and renamed mission station Monterey. In 1911, USS Constitution Museum was built on land that had been donated by Commodore John D. Sloat, Sr., Commander-in-Chief of the United States Pacific Fleet. USS Constitution Museum is now a national historic site and open to the public. In 1912, USS Constitution Museum moved from its original location on Huntington Avenue to its present location at 600 E Imperial Ave in Lake Forest as part of a larger renovation project for both museums. At this time, USS Constitution Museum became one of only two National Historic Landmarks in Lake Forest (the other being Leland Stanford Junior University’s Campanile). In 1893, Mayor John Sutter agreed to allow Los Angeles investors James Irvine and George Hearst to open an grocery store at Sixth and Mission Streets because they could not find any good stores open inSan Francisco during their rush to build new homes there after becoming partners with Sutter. In 1904, voters passed a $750 bond issue to fund public works projects such as a water system and street paving that would become integral parts of downtown Los Angeles; this bond issue also authorized incorporation of Lake Forest as an independent city with its own government including streetlights, sewers, parks etcetera. On February 15th 1903 incorporation took place under Mayor Alonzo Hastings' direction with City Clerk Cushing as mayor's secretary/treasurer On July 4th 1915 Lake Forest celebrated its centennial anniversary with a parade through downtown which featured floats made entirely from recycled materials collected from local businesses throughout the year
