In 1941, when World War II started, the Air Force was created as a result of the National Defense Act of 1939. The act established the Department of Aeronautics and Space within the government and mandated that all federal departments handle aviation research and development. One such department was the Army's Research Laboratory which was given responsibility for RAF plants in England. One of these aircraft plants was located in Lakewood which became an important center for fighter production during World War II. The plant produced P-47 Thunderbolt fighters for United StatesAAF forces in Europe. This factory also manufactured other types of aircraft such as B-24 Liberators, P-38 Lightninges and A-20 Havocs. During World War II, Lakewood played an important role in fighter production because it had a large number of advanced aircraft factories with world-class skilled workers who could produce high quality products at very low cost. This is why this area is often referred to as "The Aircraft Factory." After World War II ended, many planes were produced by both American companies and foreign partners but none so prolifically as British Zephyr Airlines Ltd.-owned RAF Plant No. 4 (now known as EOKA) on Ithaca Road in southeast Lakewood. At its peak during hostilities between Japan and America over Okinawa Island in 1945/46; RAF Plant No. 4 constructed more than 400 airplanes including 40% Navy Wildcats! During wartime years many USAAF airfields were converted into military airfields after they were captured by Allied forces or surrendered to Axis powers - most notably RAF Castleford on Canada's near east coast opposite Halifax while USAF Battle Ground ran adjacent to Royal AustralianAF Station Darwin immediately south east from Canberra main city limits). These military airfields became bomber bases with Major General Dwight Eisenhower naming them Strategic Air Forces Areas (SAAF) which operated American bombers flown primarily strategic bombing missions against enemy targets throughout Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa respectively...thus providing essential support for ground troops fighting on three fronts - theatreofoperations rather than battlefield support tasks usually assigned to wing commanders or group commanders alone...

It is located on the western edge of the city limits, and shares borders with Glendale to the north, Sherman Oaks to the east, and Westwood to the south. The surrounding area has been inhabited for over 8,000 years. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lakewood were Spanish missionaries in 1769–70. They named it La Cerda de los Vaqueros because there was a wood where deer were hunted (now part of Glendale). In 1853, gold was discovered at Saugus Bay near present-day Van Nuys Boulevard and Riverside Drive; this led to an rush of people into what is now Lakewood from all over Southern California. In 1881, two men named John Haggerty developed land along what is now Van Nuys Boulevard between Crescent Heights and Pico Rivera Roads. This became known as Haggerty Ranch after them. The town started off as just a few hundred people living on these acres… until they opened up their business by building stores and selling goods direct to consumers! By 1912, businesses had expanded so much that they required their own school house which made things even more difficult for teachers who could only offer rudimentary instruction in subjects like mathematics or English through home economics classes! A fire destroyed most of downtown Lakewood on May 1st 1904 while residents were inside their homes; however some buildings did not burn such as City Hall Annex #2 which still stands today

The downtown area has been rebuilt numerous times over the years due to fires, earthquakes and other events which have impacted the community. One specific event which left an indelible mark on Lakewood was when a large section of central park known as "The Grove" collapsed after being struck by lightning during a storm on May 3rd 1924
