The Lakewood Army Ammunition Plant was a United States military ammunition plant located in Lakewood, California. It operated from 1919 until it closed in 1996. The plant produced artillery rounds and other munitions for the United States Armed Forces. It was also home to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 10th Infantry Division during World War II.
Lakewood is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 9,884 at the 2010 census. It is located about 28 miles south of Bakersfield and about 12 miles east of Palmdale. The town was named after Lakewood Ranch in San Bernardino County, which was founded by Captain David Sutter in 1848. Captain Sutter purchased the Ranch from the Defoe family and renamed it Lakewood Manor after himself. He also built a dam on the western edge of the ranch to create what is now known as Lakewood Reservoir. George Wittekamp, who ran an agricultural company in nearby Bakersfield, opened his first store there in 1876. The post office was established in 1881 and remained open until it closed in 1961; its ZIP code at that time was 92334. In 1886 Wittekamp married Anna Ladd and moved to Lakewood with her; they lived there until he died in 1951. In 1950 a high school (now called Lakeside High School) opened for students in business and industrial classes; it continued operation until 1988 when it merged with nearby Claremont High School to form Lakeside-Claremont Unified School District #2. In 1957 a park developed near present-day Main Street - originally known as "Wittekamp Park" - which became home to the local softball team, basketball team, and other recreational activities during the early days of this district's existence. In 1974 prominent local developer Sam Ziegler bought land adjacent to Main Street for use as future development rights for what would become Lakewood Village – eventually becoming one of Kern County's most popular housing developments over the years due to its plethora of retail shops, restaurants, golf courses, etc.; today much of that center remains undeveloped but some new buildings have been completed or are under construction elsewhere within village limits while others are still being planned or are undergoing renovation/refurbishment (e.g., Sears Tower).

The Heergrenadenfeuerwerks were employed extensively during World War II to devastating effect against Allied forces. Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 33,794 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Diego County after La Jolla and it is also the largest city within Mission Viejo Regional Park. The first permanent resident of Lakewood was José Altamira who settled on a small island near what is now downtown Lakewood in 1821. A year later, Alvarado Street was named for him and his group of Spanish American soldiers who fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1846, when California became a United States territory, entrepreneurs James Waugh and John Toole founded an agricultural settlement called Atwater Village on an undeveloped lot north of downtown San Diego that would become the future town of Lakewood. In 1847, they sold their land to John Sutter for $3500 dollars and started building the first school in what would become Lakewood. In 1850–51, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered all Native Americans living east of San Gabriel Mountains to leave by force or be slaughtered; as a result many people left Atwater Village for new homes in Lakeside (now part of North Park), Coyote Hills (now part of La Mesa), or even Ashington (now part of Rancho Bernardo). Only about fifty people remained at Atwater Village when war began between Mexico and America on April 19th – twenty-four men from the Battalion Of Los Angeles Regiment led by Captain Samuel Merrill McIntosh from Canoga Park had volunteered to fight with General Manuel Micheltorena’s 1st Infantry Division detachment commanded by Lt. Col George Armstrong Custer at El Cerrito del Norte River crossing south of Santiago Heights before withdrawing back toward Los Angeles following news that Mexico had withdrawn its troops from California under US generals Kearny and Taylor but not before inflicting serious casualties upon them including Captains Merrill McIntosh and Hiram Maxim whose horse got lost while pursuing Mexicans across El Cerrito del Norte River which resulted in its capture: McIntosh received a Silver Star for this gallantry.) In 1861 Congress gave President Abraham Lincoln complete control over western territories newly acquired from Mexico via Annexation Act with jurisdiction over both Texas and Arizona Territory; because there were no inhabitants living west of Fresno County or northwest of Sacramento Valley they were placed under Military District Of Southern California headquartered at Tucson where General Edmund Peebles commanding Third Brigade First Cavalry Division served as Military Police commander until November 1863 when he took command operations against mining camps located along Mono Pass thereby reducing violence around these areas which ceased completely once mining gear could be transported into those valleys safely) The population reached 10,000 by 1870 but declined steadily due to various factors such as disease brought over by settlers who processed Indian scalps for trade then contracted smallpox which decimated local populations among other things also contributing to decline including numerous natural disasters such as devastating floods that destroyed towns along missions Creek etc.) Population peaked again around 1920 with 30,000+ residents when oil production began providing jobs however since then it has slowly declining trend mainly due to various reasons such as loss off oil revenue & competition from newer cities like Anaheim & Signal Hill etc.) However recent growth has been seen recently thanks to several initiatives such as designation as “city” within SDCLU& designation as one of five “Global City” by World Bankagreements urban renewal programs & efforts towards creating public art program
In 1859, the California Gold Rush started and quickly led to increased population in the area. In 1865, a post office was established at what is now Lakewood with the name of "Gold Hill." The town grew rapidly and by 1870 had 6 stores, 2 saloons and 4 blacksmiths. In 1875, the first school was built in what is now Lakewood. That year also saw the opening of the Butterfield Overland Mail Railway from Sacramento to Lakewood. The town prospered until World War II when it fell into decline due to loss of jobs in military production. After the war, there was an increase in housing development and steady growth until 2003 when a major fire destroyed most of downtown and caused extensive damage to property. Since then, efforts have been made to rehabilitate and redevelop the area as a mixed-use community with retail, residential, commercial and park space
