Lakewood, California is home to the first artisan coffee shop in North America. The shop was founded by Joseph and Rosie McGee in 1978. The shop has been run by the same family for over thirty years. In 2013, the business passed away from Joseph's death until it was reopened by his wife, Rosie McGee, under new ownership. Now open full time as a museum and cafe, the shop features an extensive collection of coffee equipment and cups made by local artisans. In addition to specialties such as French press coffee and Seattle Coffee Club espresso, the store also sells t-shirts and other memorabilia related to artisan coffee history. As part of its celebration of thirty years of operation, the store will offer a free interview with Rosie McGee on Saturday, May 8th from 10am-12pm during their regular open hours at 363 E First Street in Lakewood.

It is located in the southeastern corner of San Diego County and is bordered by La Mesa to the east and South Park to the west. The first Europeans to visit Lakewood were Spanish missionaries in 1769. In 1821, Rancho Viejo de Tijuana was surveyed as part of Rancho San Pedro y la Gaviota Mexican land grant. Captain José Altamirano named it after his father-in-law, Santiago Bolaños de Alvarado (1765–1829), who had been captain general of Mexico City from 1800 until his death in 1821. The name "Alvarado" may have been inspired by another grantee, José Antonio Alvares (1781–1860), one of governor Manuel Micheltorena's aides during the Mexican War of Independence fighting for Santa Fe forces against General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army. A post office called Alvarado was established at this location on December 12, 1825; it changed its name to Lakewood on November 1, 1868 when it became a U.S. town under patent number 7163 from Ulysses S. Grant granted on October 10, 1870 (). The date indicates that settlement began before October 10th 1870 which would put Lakewood back at about January 5th or 6th according to our calendar…….. In 1886 Los Angeles Corporation organized a town committee which recommended that the name be changed from Alvarado to Lakewood because “the valley” looked like a body of water with several mountains visible in it and because “a clear stream running through its center seemed more beautiful than any other streams we had seen”…..In 1902 Jens Jensen (1901-1982) founded Weingarten Nursery & Garden Center in what is now known as Old Town Square…..Weingarten quickly became well known throughout Southern California for its Hardy Annual Flowers (Asteraceae)….By 1958 Weingarten had outgrown Old Town Square and moved into what is now called Nordhoff Plaza…. After years of discussion among Eastlake residents over whether they wanted their own incorporated village or not – culminating with an election held on April 3rd 1961 – Nordhoff Plaza became officiallyLakewood Village Incorporated on September 14th 1961………………………………………It should be noted that there were two villages within Eastlake: Nordhoff Plaza and Lakeshore Estates……………..The growth of Lakeshore Estates ledto a reversal of fortunes for Nordhoff Plaza when developers bought most of the Homesite lots adjoining Waterfront Drive between El Mirador Boulevard and Harbor Drive……On July 26th 1984 park ranger Lt Jerry Wright discovered over $1 million worth looted artifacts dating back to pre Hispanic era stored inside an old munitions storage bunker near Lakeshore Estates………………………………………This discovery prompted public outcry which led to Sacramento Mayor Dianne Feinstein giving formal noticethat she would only allow development if all evidence pointed towards Native American cultural heritage being stolen from private citizens…………………No arrests have ever been made in connection with this case though numerous leads continue to circulate………………………………………. After much deliberation park ranger Lt Jerry Wright decided not pursue charges against anyone involved

Some of the first artisan coffee roasters in the United States were located in New York City. One of these was The French Press Coffee Company, which opened its doors in 1892. This company was started by two brothers, Auguste and Jules de la Roque. They roasted their own beans and also served them country-wide. In 1915, Artisan Coffee Company was founded in Providence, Rhode Island by Dutch immigrants John Deere and Cornelius Van der Linden. The company began selling coffee direct to consumers from their brick-and-mortar store. In the 1940s, Artisan Coffee introduced a new espresso machine called the “Super 8” that allowed for more customization of how each shot tasted than previous espresso machines. By the early 1990s, most of the major US retail chains had stopped carrying artisan coffee because it became too competitive with adjacent brands that offered lower prices and greater variety of products. However, some small independent cafes continued to sell artisan coffee until around 2000 when Starbucks acquired most of the small businesses operating within its chain

Lakewood was founded on May 25, 1853 by Capt. John C. Fremont and his party of gold seekers while they were exploring the Sacramento Valley. The town was named for the Thousand Lakes region that lay to the east, northwest, and northeast of it. The first post office in Lakewood was established on July 1, 1853. It served as the headquarters for a short time before being moved to what is now downtown. The original building still stands and is used as a museum today. On November 15, 1860, Lakewood became part of California during the Mexican-American War when it united with other towns in San Francisco County and formed Fillmore County. On February 14, 1867, it became an incorporated city under the name of Lakewood National Monument after President Ulysses S. Grant designated it as such pursuant to Executive Order No. 13727 filed on January 16th of that year by Secretaryof War Edwin Mudge
