Lakewood is a small city in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The population was estimated to be 58,895 at the 2010 census, up from 47,594 at the 2000 census. It is located on the edge of the San Fernando Valley and on a bend of Los Angeles River. Lakewood was founded in 1887 by lumbermen who came across the river from Southern California. The first store in town was opened by J.P. Morgan and his partners John Dolan and Martin Kelly in 1889. In 1899, John Fitch bought an interest in Lakewood Merchants Bank and renamed it Lakewood National Bank. The first shopping center in town was built east of Main Street between 1912 and 1914 by local contractor George Wernick Sr.. In 1951, Mayor Angelo Rossi merged two neighboring towns, Vernon and Covina into Lakewood so that they would have a single government with more resources devoted to their shared interests than they currently had. At its peak as a city with over 200 businesses, Lakewood had 5 schools, 2 hospitals (the Veterans Affairs Medical Center & County-Wide Mental Health Center), 2 libraries (the Glencoe Branch Library & Eastlake Library), 3 parks (Covina Park & North Hollywood Park), 1 fire department/emergency services center (The Glencoe Station) and 1 water filtration plant (The Weir). However, during the 1970s development boom that followedurbanization efforts EAI Corporation acquired many of these properties for its new westside medical district which soon created competition for jobs and land near downtown lakewood among other neighborhoods southeast of downtown LA
