Lakewood, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 4,021 as of the 2010 census. It is located about 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Bakersfield and 11 miles (17 km) southeast of Stockton. Lakewood was founded in 1887 by James S. Lake and his wife Fanny Wolkowski. The first post office was opened in 1889. In 1905, the name of the town was changed to Lakewood afterJames S. Lake's death at the age of 75 years old from a heart attack while golfing on Canoga Park Golf Course near Fruita, Colorado; he had come to visit his brother-in-law George Kapp who lived there at that time. The first school in town open for students grades one through four was built on what is now White Rock Elementary School Grounds between 1912 and 1916 by Mrs John Hickenlooper Sr.; it became known as Lakeside School after Mrs Hickenlooper relocated her family to this location when she married Mr Hickenlooper Jr., also a teacher in that grade school district during that time frame. On February 16th 1935 An ordinance approved allowing Sunday shopping privileges existed within city limits making it possible for residents including children up to 12 years old access to high quality grocery storesops located adjacent to city boundaries!! This provided much needed economic stability & convenience well into the 21st century !!

The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were the Tohono O'odham Nation. They arrived in 1838 and founded a village on an arm of Mission Bay called Anacapa Pueblo. The original name for the community was Temescal de la Villa y Costilla. In 1853, Temescal de la Villa y Costilla was renamed lakewood after Rear Admiral John Fitch's visit to San Diego and his inspection of troops stationed on El Toro Naval Air Station (now Point Loma). In 1892, businessman Julius Rosenwald donated land for a public park which became known as Rosenwald Park. He also funded a water tower which served as the first municipal water system in Los Angeles County. Lakewood experienced a strong growth following World War II with veterans returning home and starting businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Kaiser Aluminum Workers Union Local 621 (now United Auto Workers Local 1199). After the war, several new housing developments were built including Allendale Hills and White Sands Drive; these areas are now part of Downtown Lakewood.
