Lakewood's first post office opened in 1907 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1961 due to declining mail volume. Today, only one small piece of former Lakewood Post Office still remains: the front steps leading up to its building located at 601 N Central Ave., which are currently used by City Hall as part of their public address system . The area around present-day downtown Lakewood was once largely rural with few buildings other than outhouses and barns; however, during World War II various businesses moved into what would become today's central business district including Sears Roebuck & Co., Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company (later Wacom Corporations), American Motors Corporation (later GMC), Pacific Gas & Electric Company (later PG&E), Kress Rubber Company (now Lululemon Athletica), Los Angeles Times Newspaper Division (now Hearst Corporation) and United Fruit/Henderson Copper Mines
