Lakewood, California has a rich coffee history dating back to the early 1800s. The first coffee bean harvest in this town was in 1868, and the first Starbucks opened in 1978. Gourmet Coffee Inc., founded in 1975, is one of the oldest and largest roasting companies in the United States. Gourmet Coffee Holdings Inc., headquartered in Seattle, Washington, is a subsidiary of Starbucks Group Corporation. In 2009, Gourmet Coffee Holdings announced it would be selling its entire operations to Peet's Coffee Company for $3 billion. The earliest origins of gourmet coffee can be traced back to Spanish traders who visited Lakewood during the years between 1692 and 1702. The traders brought with them seeds from Africa and other parts of Europe that were then planted on land near what is now downtown Lakewood. During this time period, Lakewood was known as "the Venice of North America." Theseearly pioneers were responsible for introducing a new type of coffee known as Turkish or Ethiopian Kaffa Beans because they had been grown specifically by hand on estates located near Mount Zion (now part of Interstate 5). In 1868, two men named Wesleyan Burton and William Mumford started a small coffee business called Burton & Mumford on Main Street. This business served as the prototype for later Starbucks stores which are often characterized as having beautiful architecture and design elements inspired by old European castles and cathedrals. It should be noted that at this time Starbucks was only open for lunchtime; however, their first cup of joe sold out within minutes! The popularity of Burton & Mumford's coffee soon spread throughout downtown Lakewood and beyond- even beingserved at hotels such as The Ritz-Carlton Hotel! Lakewood is a city located in the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade, CA, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 25,552 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth most populous city in California. It is also one of the fastest growing cities in the United States; according to Forbes Magazine's report "25 Cities Under 25 Million People", Lakewood has seen its population increase by more than 10%, from 22,500 residents in 2000 to 27,500 residents in 2010. Lakewood was named for a small body of water known as Big Lake and once served as an agricultural outpost on what is now the east side of downtown Sacramento. In 1847, Judge James Folsom gave two acres (0.8 km2) of land near present day Lakeshore Drive and Big Lake to John P. Haggerty for settlement as part of his Rancho El Cajon grant. The first permanent settler arrived in 1851 when Isaac Hendricks bought 60 acres (24 ha). In 1875, Samuel Morse donated 5 square miles (15 km2), or about today's portions of West Sacramento and Elk Grove Village totaling , to be used as a township within Arden County. On July 4th, 1880—the date Arden County was created—Lakewood became a City under charter granted by Governor George Hearst with boundaries that would include all but parts of West Sacramento and Elk Grove Village which were annexed into neighboring Citrus Heights during annexation hearings held on November 7th that year. The incorporation process proceeded slowly due to concerns over fire insurance premiums collected by Arden Township since it ceded its right to do so after being assured assurance from Commissioners Hearst and later Gov’t officials that such government regulation would not take place within their borders without their consent or acquiescence Aboriginal citizens had earlier organized themselves into several societies known collectively as “The Indians” who resided along French Street between Market and Center Streets where they raised crops and fished until white men came among them asking for their assistance building roads or murdering Indian cattle rustlers reported Joseph Ahernback . Thereafter periodic skirmishes took place between these groups over accessorial rights leading finally to open warfare on February 17th 1885 when 6 Indians were killed including 2 chiefs notorious for raiding parties into Contra Costa County northeast of San Francisco Bay resultantly boundary changes were made effective March 1st resulting in loss of 640 acres (.27 km2) contiguous with present day Waterford Park lying west thereof including all but 8 blocks comprising modern day Highland Park
