Lakewood is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 21,890 at the 2010 census. It is the commercial and industrial center of the Unincorporated San Bernardino County. It is also home to Claremont Colleges and many other universities. The first recorded mention of Lakewood was on December 11, 1853 when Leland Stanford mentioned it in a letter to his brother-in-law Joseph Folsom. In 1865, General Pershing visited Lakewood and noted that "the town looks like an old Spanish mission." The name Lakewood may have been chosen because it resembled a clear turquoise lake. In 1886, Samuel Morse donated land for a public school in what is now downtown Lakewood. At this time there were only four schools in San Bernardino County: two public schools and two private schools. In 1901, construction began on the Claremont College campus and by 1923, all of Claremont's students had moved into new buildings on Park Avenue in downtown Lakewood. This event signaled the beginning of major growth for Lakewood as an educational center with new businesses quickly moving into its district including A&P grocery stores (now Kroger), Safeway Supermarkets (now Walmart), Ford Motorsports dealership (now Autozone), Sam’s Club warehouse store (now Lowe’s Home Hardware) and more than twenty restaurants including Olive Garden Italian restaurant which opened its doors in 1984 just blocks from where Interstate 10 ends at State Route 41 . Lakewood has always been one of Southern California’s wealthiest communities with well over one hundred thousand residents who settled here between 1853 and 1945 inclusive; thanks largely to railroad investments which brought farmers onto these vast acres for production of fruits, nuts or cottonseed oil – some 20 miles northward of today's city limits along SR 41 corridor going east/west across today's Porter Ranch area – each family enjoyed access to quality education while enlarging their taxable acreage several times through purchases or contributions from others involved locally or nearby regionally with benefits ensuing both physical & economic development throughout much decades thereafter following initial settler arrivals during such expansive era Angelenos commonly called “Gold Rush Fever”; thus also resulting significant influxes emanating primarily white Anglo European Americans business people professionals etc., creating numerous Professional Business Milieu [PBM] culture transplanted early generations Old GIs USMC WWII veteran Sailor Generation Alameda residents post- Pearl Harbor American Naval Academy cadet Class members into cities during those years following Valley flooring Gold Rush days
