Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 34,259 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Diego and is bordered by Mission Valley to the north, Garden Grove to the east, and Ramona to the south. The first people who set foot in what is now Lakewood were Native American traders from Southern California. They arrived via shipwrecked ships in 1769 and found land that they named "Tulare" after Spanish explorer Gaspar de la Hoz. A post office called Tulare was established in 1873, but it closed in 1903. In 1905, entrepreneur Julius Rosenwald incorporated the city as a dry goods store town with a population of 300 people. Rosenwald's company manufactured radios and other electronic equipment for military use during World War I. In 1925, Rosenwald sold his interest in the company to Walter Winchell Inc., which became one of America's leading radio broadcasters. Under Winchell's leadership, Lakewood experienced rapid growth; its population tripled between 1927 and 1951 to 15,000 residents. By 1957 it had reached 30,000 residents and began planning its present downtown core on two main streets—Canyon Boulevard (now Civic Center Drive) and Roosevelt Street—which would house both local businesses and psychiatric hospitals until they were demolished in 1978 as part of an urban renewal program spearheaded by Mayor Bob Filner. Winchell died suddenly before he could implement his plan; however his widow continued work on behalf of Lakewood through her charitable foundation until her death in 1984. In 1990 City Councilwoman Lynda Bell issued a proclamation naming May Day as "Walter Winchell Day" within Lakewood Municipal Hall in commemoration of him and others who have helped make her community one of distinction within San Diego County
