Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California. The estimated population of the city was 97,671 as of 2018. The city is located on the eastern edge of San Diego County and borders La Jolla to the south and Carlsbad to the north. The area now known as Lakewood was first settled by Native American people in the late 1700s. In 1836, General Zachary Taylor founded Rancho Santa Fe de la Alameda y Santiago near present-day Lakewood. By 1853, settlers had erected two adobe houses within what is now downtown Lakewood and began trading goods with Mexicans living in Chula Vista and other parts of southern San Diego County. A post office was established at what is now Chain of Lakes Park in 1854, and soon there were two stores and a school open for students in what is today downtown Lakewood. In 1860, Rancho La Brea Mexican land grants were made available for settlement within Don Valley Federal Reserve District; one grant went to Rear Admiral John Sutter (1811-1876), who set up his rancho near present-day Union City before moving it intoangelical hands in 1867. After becoming an independent municipality on January 1, 1912,[2][3] Lakewood became part of Imperial Beach Municipal limits when that town was incorporated on December 12th,[4] but remained unincorporated until its annexation by Lakewood into San Diego County on July 15th,[5] making it one of only a few cities annexed into county governments without having their own elected officials.[6][7][8] Lakewood's early years were cloudy with little progress being made due to lack of capital or support from either government entities or individual citizens; however, this changed after Mayor Harry Arnold formed a committee which composed mostly civilian volunteers to develop plans for developing downtown while also working towards securing private investment which would allow for businesses such as supermarkets (later Safeway) and theaters (later Fox Theater) to be built Downtown while also increasing tourism opportunities throughout the city center[9]. With increased traffic coming through town due to both new developments happening Downtown[10], shopping centers being built outside townlimits such as Stockton Boulevard mall[11], restaurants opening up all over town including several Chinese restaurants[12], turning industrial areas around Town Square into vibrant neighborhoods complete with parks and plazas,[13],[14],[15],[16], Mayor Arnold got airtime from networks across America hosting events like White House Correspondents Dinner where he accepted an award from then President Franklin D Roosevelt Jr.. In 1963–1964 The Beatles came through town performing at Candlestick Park; they are estimated to have drawn about 60,000 fans during their three day visit[17]. That same year saw the opening of First Baptist Church which served as both a community center and worship spot until its arson fire in 1971 which destroyed most if not all evidence remaining inside since it had been used by local radio station KGMB since 1949.[18]; that same yearsaw another major event taking place when American idol originated from Northlake High School & moved onto Warner Bros Studios lot eastside where they continue performing until present day
