The USS Constitution, a United States Navy ship that was stationed in Lakewood during World War II, is sometimes referred to as the "Navy Deployed Gift History". The ship served as a training vessel for naval aviators and was later converted into a buoy tender. It was decommissioned in 1960 and sold for scrap in 1974. However, the USS Constitution's story does not end there; after its sale, it was given back to the United States Navy as a museum ship and remains present today on San Diego's HarborWalk.
Lakewood is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,471 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the San Joaquin River. The first settlement in what is now Lakewood was made by Native Americans in 1769. A post office called "Lake View" was established in 1821, and remained in operation until 1875. In 1874, there were only three families living within the limits of present-day Lakewood when a group of businessmen from Stockton founded the town on land they had purchased from Missionaries of Christ. They named their new community after a small body of water—the "Lake" being an abbreviation for Stockton Creek—containing many beautiful meadows and woods. After several years of growth and development, business leaders decided to name their new town "Lakewood" after themselves as well. The first store opened at 4th Street and MacArthur Avenue on November 11, 1876. By 1886, there were twelve businesses operating in downtown Lakewood with a population of 3200 people; seven churches played important roles in early community life with services such as Sunday school and choir performances offered weekdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm; two banks providing banking services; six physicians practicing medicine within one mile (1 km); four machine shops manufacturing goods for local consumption or export; fiftythree residential units including tenements and cottages; two libraries with bookshelves that could hold up to 100 volumes each; five schools offering elementary education through eighth grade until 1907 when state law mandated compulsory high school graduation for all students residing therein; fourteen residences for professional men who worked outside the village limits serving as social clubs for their members which included nurses, teachers and doctors while also hosting banquets/ meetings/ balls etc.; eleven residences were used by military personnel during World War I while one house served as an encampment during World War II A post office called "Fremont" was established at 2nd Street & Fremont Avenue on October 16, 1902 . It remained operational until 1915. The last resident to leave Lakewood was Mrs. Ida Jahnke on December 12th 1920 . In 1922–1924 there was construction along Third Street between Main Street (now College Ave) and Fremont Avenue which included("the biggest concrete job ever done")and a parkland area measuring 1 acre (40 m2). The resulting result led to increased traffic volume around the intersection caused by Choate's department store opening down Third Street opposite University Boulevard making it difficult for pedestrians crossings Main Street without going into choate's side yard whereupon vehicles would have driven right past them without stopping
The United States navy has a rich and varied history that can be traced back to the early days of the country. After the war, the navy began to grow and by 1800 it had become a powerful force on the seas. In 1805, Commodore James Cook sailed into unknown waters and discovered new continents for America. This event is often considered one of the greatest achievements of the navy and helped solidify America’s claim as a world power. Over time, however, some problems arose with the navy. For example, during World War II many ships were lost at sea due to over-speculation on fuel prices and lack of torpedoes or other weapons necessary for combatting submarines. Other problems include price gouging by shipyards and Congress not trusting Admiral Chester Nimitz with conducting effective operations off shore because he was too old or blind; this led to his recall in 1944 after only four years in command). Nevertheless, through all these struggles and controversies, US naval capabilities have always been larger than those of any other nation at any time throughout its history. The first humans to live in what is now Lakewood may have been traders from nearby cities such as Berkeley and Concord. Their trade goods brought up by sailboats from Asia reached them on shore near where they lived today during Cannery Row days in 1846-1847. In 1875, James Fenton built an insurance company office in this location which became one of America's most important early businesses. In 1906, a small group of Angelenos began purchasing land east of downtown for residential development and christened it "Lakewood." They were motivated by desire to rid their city of its high rates for water usage and transportation; during that time much Southern California was still undeveloped. The name stuck until changed to its current form in 1923 when developers purchased more land around town (now east side). By 1930, retail stores had taken over most commercial areas north of Interstate 580 while single family homes continued to grow south along West San Pablo Boulevard and west into MacArthur Boulevard; Lakewood's original Center City district had all but disappeared. In 1940, when war began with Japan, many people evacuated their homes due to fear of air raids but few returned once hostilities ended two years later without any attacks or damage done theretoby. That same year saw the opening day of American Legion hall #1 on International Drive across from present-day City Hall after a long battle between local promoters/builders Gus Frisbie and Al Reinhardt who managed to get both halls into business within weeks after making an offer for both properties at $8 per square foot each (with frontage on International Drive) against higher bids being received by other developers at $24 per square foot each! This demonstrates just how quickly Lakewood could become established as a vibrant civic center even during wartime – something that has yet to be duplicated since then! Thereafter came steady growth as businesses prospered: truck stops opened up along I-580 (+ several others), fast food restaurants mushroomed (+ plenty more coming since!), bars/clubs sprang up everywhere including down streets off 5th Avenue (- back then this area was mostly industrial), home builders sprouted up all over town (+ countless single family dwellings popping up like weeds), and soon enough NightLife Arena became known throughout Northern California for hosting major professional sports events (Lakers Lakers etc.) – all before anyone even realized it! It wasn't until the late 1990s that things really started heating up with new housing developments popping up near lakefront parks + sport arenas making everything seem even more crowded than it already was! Prices have cratered recently following various economic downturns however;still though no matter how busy things are Downtown & Nearshore everyone knows everyone else… so there’s that :) Today Lakewood remains one of Contra Costa County’s largest communities with excellent infrastructure - including BART access - public transportation options available outside downtown bordering Hayward & Oakland - ample parkland perfect for children + dogs + large stadiums/areas dedicated solely to recreation like Aquatics Stadium which seats 20K+, Sleep Train Arena which can seat 50K+ AND Kaiser Permanente Stadium capable seating nearly 80K+. As well as numerous top tier businesses such as Wells Fargo bank [which moved from Pleasanton], Macy’s [which moved out], Applebee’s [which closed], KFC[which closed] – just some examples…. Plus there are also numerous artist studiospaces doing creative work right here amongst us….. heck we even have our own version of Amazon [-_-] so if you need anything please don’t hesitate TO CALL US….
