Lakewood (population: 32,000) is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the southeast side of Los Angeles and bordered by Pasadena to the north, Long Beach to the east, Vernon to the south and Westchester to the west. The area now comprising Lakewood was first established as a small farming community in 1887. The city’s name comes from two Indian words meaning “lake wood” or “fresh water mangrove swamp.” In 1907, Lakewood became one of five cities in Southern California that were granted charter status by Governor James Buchanan under the Statehood Act of 1912. On April 17, 1915, it was annexed by Los Angeles County. On November 3, 1923, a fire destroyed most of downtown Lakewood and killed 20 people; it remains one of the deadliest fires in LA history. Lakewood is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 103,610 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after South Pasadena and is the fastest-growing major town in California. The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were the Tongva people who inhabited parts of Southern California before moving northward over time. There are two sources for this account; one says that Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo landed on San Francisco Bay on October 14, 1542 AD and another claims he did so on November 7th of that year. Either way, he soon encountered Native Americans living near Mission San Diego de Alcalá which led him to believe that there was land east of the missions where he could found a new settlement. The area around what is now Lakewood was already being used for agricultural purposes by early Spanish explorers when they arrived in 1769. José Altamira explored this area during his 1774 survey of southern California and named it La Linda after an uninhabited site about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of present-day Lakewood. In 1871, JOSÉ MATÍAS GONZÁLEZ located Rancho Rincon del Rey just north of today's downtown core while conducting a grazing expedition with General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as part of his invasion of Sonoma County overland from Monterey Bay into central California. This event helped spur development along Rincon Road later known as Pico Boulevard between downtown and Rincon Point State Park until it became City Boulevard when it was annexed by the city in 1928. Arambideño Indians had been living here since 1602 when they returned from their long journey down Mexico's Baja Peninsula seeking refuge from Spanish colonists looking for Spaniards who had discovered large amounts of gold and silver hidden throughout Central America including Veracruz Province west to Acapulco Municipality south to Tlaxcala Municipality east to Manila Island . After spending some time among them, Padre Manuel Ríos decided against making himself governor at Mexico City but instead founded two missions— Nuestra Señora del Rosario (1802) and Nuestra Senhora de las Mercedes (1804)—in what is today downtown Lakewood because he wanted converts to Christianity rather than expelahanized natives who would continue practicing their own kind of Catholicism anyway . There were other similar conversions before Mexican independence in 1821 led by Agustín Castro y López with justification because Mexico no longer needed or wanted any more heathens running around her borders following Spain's defeat at Bunker Hill which ended 25 years of colonial rule across North America including Discovery Colony/Los Angeles/Mexico City areas
