Lakewood is a city located in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 54,724 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Bernardino County after Gurnee and is the fifth-most populous city in California. The first settlement in what is now Lakewood occurred around 1847 when pioneers brought supplies of seed corn from Pico Rivera to establish a homestead onranch land east of present-day Villa Park Road. The town was named for Colonel John Leland Lake who laid out a town site on holdings granted him by Governor Manuel Nieto in 1851. A post office called "Leland" was established in 1854, but no townsite was ever built because development was slow until after World War II when much housing development started throughout southern San Bernardino County with new highways connecting Los Angeles to Irvine through central lakewood In 1915 developer Raymond Clapper bought 3 square miles (8 km2) northeast of downtown from Hiram Johnson for $1 million dollars which he promptly designated into an area called "Clapper's Mesa". Economic development followed with many companies establishing headquarters here including Ford Motor Company (1948), Lockheed Martin (1949), Warner Bros Pictures (1950), UPS (1973) and numerous other high technology firms during the early 21st century while also creating thousands of jobs both locally and statewide. By 2000 nearly all manufacturing had left downtown along with most professional services except education few years later leaving only single family homes remaining Downtown while much new retail began popping up near I-10/I-15 interchange As investment increased outside Loop 1604 led by real estate mogul Harry Macklowe both the number of people living close to work quadrupled starting around 1970 while suburban sprawl rapidly took hold swallowing up farmland between Lakeshore Boulevard/UCLA Drive NW and Arroyo Seco Parkway SW
