Lakewood is a town in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 12,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northridge– chaparral– fertile zone region. The first Americans to settle in what is now Lakewood were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1769 and 1770. The name "Lakewood" was given to the area by George Vancouver when he explored the coast of California along the Pacific Coast in 1792-93. He named several small bays near shore after British Columbia's Mount Robson (now Mount Shasta). One bay, called simply "Lakewood", he named after his home town of Lakenheath, England. In 1853, William Irvine built a mill on Mill Creek which served as an important economic engine for developing southwestern San Diego County during that time period. In 1871, James Jarratt bought land from Captain John Sutter and founded Jarratt & Co., one of the early leading businesses in downtown Lakewood. By 1901, most of what is now downtown Lakewood had been developed with some 7 blocks having been put up for sale for $1 per acre – making it one of the most rapidly growing towns in south San Diego County during its early years. During World War II many patriotic American soldiers settled here while they fought overseas; among them were brothers Forrestal and Joe McCarthy (the latter being elected Mayoralty Day 2003), both sons of Irish immigrants working as salesmen at Wernham Hogg Paper Company on Market Street NW in Northwest Washington Heights - across from Madison Square Garden - until their arrest on election night 1950 on charges related to communist espionage activities inside America! Lakewood is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It was founded on December 6, 1903 by members of the Mormon Church as a farmstead called Pleasant Valley. The name Lakewood was taken from the nearby Mount Vernon Ranch and Park. In 1907, Pleasant Valley was renamed to North Hollywood after Hoot Gibson, who had bought the land from the Mormons. In 1912, North Hollywood became an incorporated city with its own mayor and council. In 1916, North Hollywood annexed portions of Echo Park and Glencoe (now Glendale). The following year, Echo Park became an independent city with its own mayor and council again. On May 5, 1920, Glencoe merged into Lakewood as well. On November 15th of that year (1920), at 8:00 pm PST (December 6th in today's time), North Hollywood installed their first Mayor Harry Jaffa after winning an election against incumbent vice-mayor Ernest Marsden. The following year on January 3rd 1921 Mayor Jaffa appointed Arthur Waring as Deputy Mayor instead of Stanley Crouch who had been serving since 1920 due to health reasons On February 4th 1921 City Council passed a resolution declaring themselves "the new government of Los Angeles" under the leadership of Mayor Jaffa At this time also street addresses were changed to reflect this new government structure including Commerce Street which would later become Fairfax Avenue
