By 1852, the Kapps had acquired another piece of land west of downtown where they built their second home, Elmira Grove. In 1861, Swiss immigrant Johann Friedrich Schleicher began working on an irrigation canal that would eventually lead to San Francisco Bay. When work stopped due to war-time restrictions, Schleicher donated his land for college use which became Stanford University. After World War I ended, many Germans returned to their homes in America and decided to stay rather than return home again during difficult times like the Great Depression . In 1924, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor , American troops invaded Japan and occupied Tokyo . Many Japanese Americans were forced into concentration camps throughout America but primarily at |Hoover Dam| where over 100,000 men died from disease or starvation while living under Japanese rule
