Lancaster, California is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 23,693 at the 2010 census. Lancaster, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California. At the time of its incorporation as a city in 1907 it was the third-most populous municipality in the state of California. The population of Lancaster grew rapidly during World War II due to military activity and now reaches over 10,000 people. Lancaster began as an agricultural community on the banks of the Kern River. Today many businesses in Lancaster are related to agriculture or ranching, with a focus on feedstock production and marketing. Additionally, Lancaster is home to one of two dry-land nuclear power plants in Northern California and has developed into a center for heavy industry including aerospace manufacturing and other high technology businesses. The city was named after Samuel Blythe Lancaster, who settled near present-day Hesperia in 1853. At first some residents cleared land for farming but soon enough there were large numbers of settlers coming from surrounding communities such as dollarsville (now Yucca Valley), Springdale, and Saugus. By 1907 there were already more than 10 families living in Lancaster. In 1907 Lancaster became part of Inyo County when it was organized from parts of Mono County and San Bernardino County. The county had been formed following a proposal by Governor Hiram Johnson to create statewide agencies that would manage programs affecting all Californians not just those living within specific counties or municipalities. Included within this proposal were plans for a county seat at downtown San Francisco which would house all government operations although no real construction occurred until 1912 when new county courthouse building arrived on Market Street downtown with plans to include an auditorium and library inside (this building still stands). Lancaster's growth continued during World War II as troop movements increased throughout Southern California making it an important location for munitions production; aircraft factories produced fighter planes, bombers, missiles etc., while shipyards built warships and submarines using local resources including sandstone from nearby Mount Wilson . After the war ended many jobs moved away from Lancaster but instead reinvested in agriculture which continues today thanks to ample water supplies available through groundwater recharge projects managed by Department Of Water Resources
