Lancaster, California is a city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. Lancaster has been situated on the banks of the Kern River since 1868 when it was founded as a small post office by settlers from Bakersfield. The name Lancaster comes from an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon word meaning "the place where the salmon spawn." The first colonists in what is now Lancaster were men and women who journeyed from Bakersfield overland to establish a ranch on what is now Rancho San Marcos east of town in 1868. They named their new settlement after King Edward VII of England because they were eager to follow his lead in support of American democracy. After years of growth and development, Lancaster became an incorporated city on December 12, 1916 with a population of 2,000 people. Known for its architecture and industry (particularly papermaking), Lancaster also became known for its brewing industry during this time; five breweries still operate in town today. In 1980s and 1990s there was significant development around downtown Lancaster with the construction of two high-rise buildings that remain today: One Municipal Building (now part of the University Center) and one Pfizer building which used to house many local businesses including Jamba Juice chain store as well as several restaurants including Red Lobster and Applebee's locations before it closed down due to health concerns about its former tenant(s). In addition, another high-rise building - FirstMerit Tower - replaced much older structures in downtown Lancaster which include three brick buildings dating back to 1886 serving as both City Hall (1893), Post Office Annex (1913), and School District Administration Building (1950). Today downtown Lancaster retains much character despite some recent redevelopment projects such as renovation/updating of most all public services within city limits done by Mayor Tom Buttram since he assumed office in 2011; streetlights are being replaced throughout core business district; community center providing meeting space for groups such as Kiwanis Club & Rotary club while also hosting performances by various artists each year such as classical pianist Yvette Richardshaw or rock band Isis will take place at Community Hall each summer night
