Lancaster, California is a small city in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California. Founded in 1874 as a mining town, Lancaster has since become an agricultural and ranching center. The population was 19,822 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city within boundaries of Mono County. Lancaster is situated on I-5 south of Visalia and east of Yuba City. The area that now includes Lancaster was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1847, James Kapp discovered gold near what is now Lancaster; this led to the town's establishment as a mining town. The first post office was established in 1849; it was named for General James Kapp. Mining continued until about 1860 when production ceased due to depletion of supplies and competition from other mines. In 1870, John Cockerill founded anothermining camp called Cottonwood on what is now North Main Street in eastern Lancaster; this Camp Cockerill became part of the new city of Lancaster after it were platted on November 10, 1874 by commissioners Hahnemann and Shultz. After some debate over whether to name the new city after General JAMES KAPP or his friend John Cockerill (the founder of Camp Cottonwood), Commissioners Hahnemann and Shultz decided upon naming the new city after Captain JOHN COKERILL because he had helped lead an expedition against Mexican forces near Bakersfield two years earlier (1869). Lancaster grew rapidly during its early years as a mining town; by 1880 there were over 100 residents living in downtown buildings and several hundred people working in mining operations. However, as metal prices plummeted during the Panic Of 1893, many miners left Lancastereroom for better paying mines outside California along with their families - finally ending its heyday as a metal-producing center. However, today much remains historical about this once thriving community including many narrow streets still named for former residents such as Hillstreet (now North Main Street) which ran through downtown before becoming roadless open space following incorporation into theCityofLancaster

In 1919, Lancaster hosted the United States Olympic trials for track and field athletes. After World War II ended, the economy declined but gradually started to improve as new industries emerged such as computer manufacturing and light trade. Since 2000, there has been an increase in development in Lancaster due to global economic growth which has led to increased job opportunities and investment within the city limits. Lancaster is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by area. The first permanent settler in what is now Lancaster was John Dyer in 1847. The town of Lancaster was incorporated on February 14, 1853, and became an important railroad junction. The original town site straddled both sides of the San Joaquin River and boasted a market place and several residences for wealthy local farmers. Some of the early businesses in Lancaster were a grocery store, shoe store, brewery, bakery and hotel. In 1860 two brothers - George Wernham and Samuel Morse - opened up their own printing press near what is now Main Street and 3rd Avenue in Lancaster; it would be their only business venture until they bought out their brother-in-law's interest in 1861. With railroads coming into prominence with increased traffic through the area during the late 19th century, mills started to come online which led to more jobs for people living within easy commuting distance of major cities like San Francisco or Oakland. In 1888, General Electric moved its headquarters from Newark to downtown Lancaster after acquiring some land northeast of downtown that had been undeveloped as part of a larger acquisition including portions of Richmond Heights (now Albany), El Sobrante (now Fremont), Antioch (now Pittsburg),Reading (now Concord) and West Milford Township (now Arlington). The company would continue its growth in this location with many new buildings being built over time such as One Library Square – GE’s first large building outside the United States – becoming one of Downtown Lancaster’s most iconic landmarks today. In 1925 when Interstate 80 was completed east of downtown between Hayward and Martinez it doubled as Route 66 making Lancaster one half way point along America’s longest highway system! With World War II drawing near throughout North America there were numerous factories consolidating themselves into locations like Buffalo Niagara Falls or Trenton New Jersey due to wartime shortages of materials like steel or aluminum but none quite as massive as those located within minutes walking distance (< 5 miles)of major population centers such as Los Angeles or New York City! After war ended there continued heavy industry dwindling away with many companies moving out west towards Reno Nevada or Phoenix Arizona however Kaiser Aluminum made a huge investment establishing itself within walking distance from Downtown Lancaster starting up what would become known today as Kingman Proving Ground helping support Valley Forge Laboratory during World War II before selling off all assets to ArcelorMittal USA just 2 years later! This move caused much stir within the community given that Kaiser Aluminum had long been considered anoutsiders looking to take advantage OFHEO while other companies essentially left town; something that still exists today albeit more subtly due to ArcelorMittal USA's expansive Corporate Headquarters located just north Of Interstate 680 & I-680 Exit 358 inside Job Corps Inc Complex).
