Lancaster is a small city located in Kern County, California, United States. It was founded by Luther Anselm Lancaster and his brothers on November 3, 1868 as the town of Lancaster. The name derived from the Angel's Flight Trail that ran through the community. The trail served as a road link between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. In 1951, the towns of Lancaster and North Hollywood were merged to form one municipality with their current name. Lancaster has experienced growth throughout its history; it has become an incorporated city with a population of over 60,000 residents in 2016. The city was named after Luther Anselm Lancaster and was first settled by him on November 3, 1868 as the town of Lancaster, California. At that time it included only a few residences along Main Street while other businesses such as a millinery store opened soon afterwards. The early residents were farmers who grew olives and grapes for local markets in Southern California. By 1890 most of the town had been constructed except for what remains today on Interstate 5 just north of downtown which became known as "Anselm's Hill". During World War II many soldiers stationed at nearby Rovin Field camped on Anselm's Hill which led to its nickname "Camp Rovin". In 1951 main streets within the old city boundaries were combined to form east-west Main Street when North Hollywood was annexed into Lancaster proper. This merger increased business opportunities for both cities resulting in more job growth over time including an increase from 50 jobs in 2000 to 100 jobs in 2016 alone! Today there are many distinctive buildings found within Lancaster’s historical district including: First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt House Museum (the former home and seat of then-Mayor Harry Jaffe), Painted Ladies National Monument (a series of two brick houses built between 1895-1902), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Building (now home to AARP), African American Cultural Center (later renamed Arab American Cultural Center) and much more!
Lancaster was founded in 1847 by Capt. John Lancaster and his wife, Ann. The town was named for the county in which it was located, Lancaster County. It was first settled as a small farming community on the western side of the Santa Susana Mountains, about two miles southwest of present-day Lancaster. After a few years, Lancaster began to grow rapidly due to the railroad being built through that area and its easy access to fertile soil. The population reached 3200 by 1860, and soon after began developing into an important agricultural center with several hundred farms covering over 100 square miles. By 1870, there were more than twenty businesses in town and about seventy residents. In 1878, Lancaster became an incorporated city and remained so until 1951 when it amalgamated with other nearby cities to form the modern-day city of Lancaster.
