The town was named for Anna's father, Lancaster County being the original land grant given to him by the United States Government. The first post office in Lancaster opened in 1850. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in the small town. In 1865, the first water system was built in Lancaster and a school was established in 1870. The population of Lancaster peaked at over 1,000 in 1880 but decreased to just under 500 by 1910 due to several factors including economic hard times and World War I. However, during World War II the town saw an increase in population as war refugees arrived from Japan and Europe. The population reached its current level of 715 people as of 2010. Lancaster is located about 29 miles north-northwest of downtown San Francisco on Highway 101 between Jack London Boulevard and Yerba Buena Island (known today as Alameda). It is bordered to the east by Contra Costa County; to the south by Calaveras County; and to the west by Contra Costa County again before joining San Francisco Bay Area suburbs such as Richmond and Walnut Creek within city limits. According to 2013 estimates, Lancaster has a total area of 8 square miles (21 km²), making it one ofCalifornia's smaller towns when compared to larger metropolitan areas such as Berkeley or Sacramento.
