Larkspur is a small town in Kern County, California, located on the shore of Lake Tahoe. The community was founded by Europeans in 1859 as Larkfield, after the annual lark tree that grew there. The name may come from Spanish word "larco" meaning "to squawk or to sing", due to the high volume of songbirds that visit the area during spring and summer. Larkspur has been inhabited by various Native American groups for over 10,000 years. In 1862, prospectors discovered gold in the nearby hills and started mining there. By 1865, Larkspur had become an important stop on stagecoach Routes 66 and 101. Mexican Americans began arriving in large numbers beginning in the late 19th century and soon formed a majorities of both residents and businesses. The post office was established at Larkspur in 1868; it operated until 1901. The first school opened at Larkspur in 1876; it was replaced by a modern building in 1951. A fire destroyed much of downtown Larkspur on February 2nd, 1916; however, most damage was done to homes near Main Street. The town rebuilt quickly with help from local farmers and merchants who donated food and materials for reconstruction purposes. It reopened on Valentine's Day 1917 after spending three days closed due to rain and snowstorms that paralyzed many parts of Southern California. In 1925, John Steinbeck visited Larkspur while writing his novel "Of Mice And Men". He stayed at the Summit Hotel which still stands today along Main Street in Larkspur; he also wrote a letterpress edition of one of his books here before leaving for New York City early the next morning."

In 1906, Larkspur became an incorporated municipality. The first mayor of Larkspur was A.J. McNamara. In 1914, Larkspur amalgamated with nearby Niles to form a new city known as Niles-Larkspur. In 1978, Larkspur voters passed a resolution urging then-Governor Ronald Reagan to approve plans for Interstate 5 to be built through the town center; however, Reagan did not act upon the request and instead approved construction of I-5 south of Niles instead. In 1984, two men were killed when their truck careened off an interstate onto Private Road near present day downtown Niles and overturned into a corn field; this event remains one of California's most notorious road accidents.
