During World War II, Larkspur played a significant role in the defense of San Francisco Bay Area. Many local businesses and individuals donated their time and resources to help make munitions available for the war effort. After the war, Larkspur experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for San Francisco. However, due to various factors such as population growth and air pollution, Larkspur began to decline in popularity in the late 1960s and 1970s. In 1916, the city merged with Watsonville to form San Jose.
