Larkspur is a small town in Northern California. It is located about an hour east of Sacramento on Interstate 5. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Larkspur is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Larkspur was founded by Franciscan friars in 1847 as aJesuit mission station called San Miguel de las Pulgas (Blessed Mary's Lark). In 1872, it became an independent city and was renamed for Larkspur Hill, a hill near London that had been used as a polling place for the California election of 1853. In 1928, Larkspur incorporated as a city and its name reverted to Los Angeles County until it became incorporated as an unincorporated community in 1959. The first post office at Larkspur opened on July 1, 1847, and served the communities of Arden, Natomas, and Sutterville until it was discontinued on February 17, 1861 due to lack of mail service from Sacramento. The second post office at Larkspur opened on October 15th 1850; it served the towns of Arden and Natomas until January 3rd 1863 due to the Gold Rush frenzy that swept through these areas after Discovery Bay hit gold with startling results. On November 3rd 1863 there was another closure because too many people were coming into town for buryments during the great migration known as "the seven days" caused by cholera pandemic which also stricken other parts of America during that time period. On March 10th 1865 Joshua Chamberlain established what is now known as Chamberlin’s Store & Cafe in downtown Larkspur serving coffee and pastries until his death in 1888 while still proprietor/operator thereof; this business continued under several different owners until finally sold out to Donny & Marie Higgs who operated it successively from 1975-1986 before closing it down permanently when they moved away from rural Northern California following World War II In 1957 Samuel Morse donated land adjacent to present day White Sands Missile Range (now overgrown) off I-5 to be developed into an open space park called Morse Park which includes hiking trails around Missile Range including close up views of both launch pads where U2 flights took place during Operation Paperclip – making him one of only two people ever honored with public displays outside their home countries .
