In 1984, some residents of nearby Saugus voted to make their own municipality separate from Kern County as part of Proposition 8 which sought to promote gay marriage statewide as a way to prevent discrimination against homosexuals by county officials. Despite opposition by many residents including many business owners who felt they would lose customers if their taxes went towards supporting an unelected government that didn't share their values, they narrowly passed proposition 8 with 54% of the vote. Today, Larkspur remains one of CA's most vibrant small towns with growing businesses- both locally and nationally-and friendly community spirit that has helped it stay relatively unchanged over time despite major changes around it such as annexation by Bakersfield several times over the years (a move supported by then Mayor John Burton).
