Larkspur is a small city located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. Larkspur is part of the Reno-Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. Larkspur's history can be traced back to 1849 when American Fur trader Elisha Dickenson landed on what is now Larkspur Creek and named it after his Native American companion, Larkinshapiwee (Nelson). The first settler in present-day Larkspur was John Ritchie who arrived in 1851. The town began as a small farming community with only a few homes and barns. By 1860, the towns' population had grown to 100 people and by 1870, it had reached 250 people. At that time, Larkspur became an agricultural center with land that helped produce cotton for local merchants and manufacturers. In 1898, LC&F Railway established a line from Reno to Los Angeles via Larkspur. This made Larkspur one of the first communities served by this new railway system. In 1907, when Southern Pacific Railroad completed its electrification of the mainline between Reno and LA, they also extended their line past Larkspur to include it as part of their network. During World War II several factories were built in nearby Saugus by Varian Electric Manufacturing Company which eventually became Hitachi Corporation. After World War II ended there were many job losses due to technology advances which left the area without any major industrial jobs for many years until market demand revived them in the late 1990s through startups such as Alcoa aluminum smelting plant opening up in 2001 near larkspur airport making it easier for businesses to commute into town; Kiewit Natural Gas field being developed adjacent to town; Covanta Energy Storage Plant opened up east of town; Air Cargo Terminal being built next door at Horseshoe Airport just north of town leading to increased traffic throughout all of downtown during holiday seasons.) Larkspur is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Larkspur has been founded by the Hupa Native Americans on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley in 1849. It was named for a plant called larkspur which grows near waterfalls. Larkspur was incorporated as a townsite on July 15, 1850. The first post office in Larkspur opened in 1853 and closed in 1870. The first store opened in 1854 and closed in 1865. The first school opened kindergarten-level classes on October 6, 1861. In 1865, Larkspur became part of Oakland when that city was formed from portions of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. The last post office service operated out of Larkspur buildings until September 1969 when it moved to Orinda after being vacated by the county's then-mail services provider United States Mail (USM). In 1880, large areas around what is now Berkeley were annexed into Oakland; this left Larkspur with just over one-tenth of its original population due to annexation rates set by then-County Supervisor George Payson Wright Jr.. In 1886, International Harvester built their largest production facility outside North America at an abandoned quarry west of town; this resulted in heavy industry and development throughout much of what is now Contra Costa County but especially along Interstate 280 north of town between Antioch and Tracy; while much old industry has been replaced or preserved since then by new businesses such as Google Earth[1], there are still many remaining structures from those days including several dozen residences built during that time period known as "the Rust Belt".[2][3] Larkspur experienced significant growth following World War II with increased agricultural production brought about by automation and other technological advances as well as continued suburban housing developments within easy commuting distance from downtown Los Angeles through I-280/I-580/State Route 101 corridor.[4]:p168 dramatic changes followed through the early 21st century with increasing economic decline throughout most parts of Northern California culminating with the Recession characterized by high unemployment rates,[5]:p167 however some recent resurgence including notable job growth at West Coast Paper Company[6]:p175 notable improvements have occurred generally despite continuing challenges faced throughout most sectors particularly healthcare,[7] education[8], retail[9], infrastructure renewal[10], clean energy development[11],[12]
