Larkspur is a small town in Kern County, California, located east of Bakersfield on the Humboldt-Tooele National Forest. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. Larkspur was founded in 1877 by Captain Edwin Larkins and his wife Hannah Purdy. It post office opened in 1878 and became a town on July 14, 1880. The first recorded settler in Larkspur was Capt. Edwin Larkins who arrived with his family from New York on July 7th, 1877. Captain Edwin had come looking for land to establish a rancho grant he had been given by Governor Manuel Nieto of California; the grant included 2,500 acres (1 km²) of land north of present day North Hollywood Boulevard and east of State Route 362. Captain Edwin's brother-in-law John Sutter also settled in what is now Larkspur about two miles west of the original townsite. Drury Gourd Company built some mills around this time as well as other businesses such as a livery stable and hotel which remain extant today including the Post Office building which served as both an office and community center until 1974 when it burned down while the building used for storage caught fire; however due to insurance claims it was immediately rebuilt using local materials and reopened as a museum following its restoration project completed in 2007 Larkspur's early days were difficult because there was no water available for irrigation or farming so many people began trading goods they produced along their route from San Francisco or Bakersfield to sell back home: hams, bacon, eggs, fruit etc... In 1886 when hardware store & post office opened there were only 4 inhabitants living in what are now 3 blocks & 8 buildings!
