The Larkspur Naval Air Station, now the Ocean County Marine Institute, was a navy air station in Larkspur, California. It operated from 1941-1946. The site of the present day marina and institute is located on what was once the Naval Air Station's runway 12L/29R. In 1942, during World War II, Larkspur became one of three naval air stations in California - along with San Francisco and Long Beach - that were used to house larger numbers of navy bombers and fighters than could be accommodated at any other facility. From its inception as an agriculture research center in 1941 until it closed down in 1946, OCMI produced over 350 aircraft including many monoplanes and jets such as the Lockheed P-38 Lightning and Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. There were also numerous gliders which were used for training purposes; these included both North American SNECMA hangars (later renamed Hangar 11) and Consolidated Vultee hangar #1 at OCMI. Today's OCMI Aviation Museum features more than 150 aircraft from before World War II including a replica of an early Convair CV-2 Ventura bomber which flew for NASA during the Apollo program. Larkspur is a small town in Kern County, California, about 55 miles (87 km) north of Bakersfield and 90 miles (130 km) east of Fresno. The population was 2,500 at the 2010 census. Larkspur is located on the eastern edge of Kern County, on State Route 395E. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The name "Larkspur" was given to the community by John C. Larkin in 1892 after he found lizards there which were called "lark's tongues". He also grazed his cattle there for four years and noticed that they were getting sick due to an overgrowth of sagebrush around their pens. He named his ranch Lark's Ranch since he believed that this would make his cattle less susceptible to disease and more resistant to weather conditions. In 1906, Jens Ludwig started farming here with what is now known as Ludwig Farms Dairy; it still exists today and processes milk from cows who are raised on nearby ranches. In 1922, Julius Rosenwald donated 335 acres (140 hectares) of land along US 395 east of Larkspur for agricultural use; it still exists today as Rosenwald Ranch Agricultural Center which provides research support for local farmers and ranchers. In 1951 the Kern County Fairgrounds became home to the Lark's Landing Folk Festival when it moved from Anza-Borrego Springs; it continues annually today as a cultural event open to the public featuring music, art, food trucks and other activities downtown during early summertime .
