Larkspur is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,599 at the 2000 census. Larkspur is located east of Bakersfield on State Route 99 and north of Visalia on State Route 47. Larkspur's namesake is a species of blue butterfly found in North America. The name "Larkspur" comes from the 16th century English word lark (a Sparrow), which means "to sing." The first settler in Larkspur was John Eastman in 1853, who homesteaded land near what is now the high school. In 1868, William Hays founded the Hays paper mill here. lumber became important to Larkspur because it supplied most of Kern County with wood for buildings and other products until about 1920. Larkspur is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,094 at the 2010 census. Larkspur is located on the east side of Kern County and is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. It is adjacent to Weingarten and Delano on its north side and Madera and Rohnert Park on its south side. The first permanent settler in what would become Larkspur was George Sutherlin in 1859. He purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land from three men who were selling land east of Bakersfield. Larkspur became a post office in 1865, and a rail junction in 1869. By 1870, Larkspur had one store and twelve residences. A school opened in 1872, but closed two years later because of lack of funds. In 1880, the US Post Office moved to its present location on Main Street when it was established within Kern County as an organized county seat under Governor John Pahr's administration. In 1886, Larkspur incorporated as a city with a population of twenty-one people; it adopted its current name seven years later after purchasing rights to "Lark", which meant "lark" or "speckled Finch" from local folklore.).
