When the United States Army arrived in Larkspur in 1847, the town was already home to a small population of traders and farmers. The first American military presence in the area was a result of the Mexican-American War, which occurred nearby in 1846. The first troops stationed here were part of General Winfield Scott's column that invaded Mexico City. After his victory, Scott ordered his men to stop at Larkspur for refreshments and rest. This event is considered to be the start of American military coffee drinking habits in California. Larkspur became an important garrison during World War II because it was located on Highway 99 between Sacramento and San Francisco. In addition, it served as a staging ground for evacuations during the September 11th terrorist attacks. Today, Larkspur is known as one of America's most vibrant ghost towns because its only industry is agriculture - until recently, all food production ended here. Despite its recent history, Larkspur has been host to many events related to coffee throughout the years. The name comes from two words which are both Dutch roots: "larx" meaning "to sing" and "spur" meaning "a sharp piece of wood"). The history of Larkspur can be traced back to 1859 when John Larkin arrived in Del Norte County with his family from Ireland. He built a cabin on what is now called Rancho Los Huesos near present-day downtown Larkspur after purchasing land east of the river from José Tejada and Juan Manuel Nieto. The first post office opened in 1861, and within two years, he had developed a small farming community around his cabin named for his daughter's flower name (Larkspur). On May 3, 1865, just days after Californias statehood ceremonies were held at Recuerdo Hall in Sacramento, Larkin incorporated as a town under the name Redding with voting privileges for all residents over eighteen years old In 1915, City Council approved annexing neighboringRedding into the city limits so that all citizens would have one unified governing body; this event marked the beginning of City government as we know it today On November 4th 1922 - one year after incorporation - voters ratified an amendment to city charter changing our name to “Larkspur” Today’s vibrant commercial district sprang up around First Congregational Church – home to many local businesses since its construction in 1906 – soon followed by several other small businesses including A&P grocery store (now Jamba Juice), Ford dealership (now Quicken Loans), Home Depot Salvage Yard & Auction House and Adobe Homes Today’s lively business district began thriving because there was ample opportunity for people to get involved early on: entrepreneur Eileen Crouse started her own dry cleaning business right next door to her father’s hardware store; citrus grower/ Processor Dan Harmon cooked meals for neighbors during lunchtime until he could open his own restaurant six blocks away; restaurateur Connie Chang opened her popular Chinese takeout eatery across from school; musician Tom Morello played live music throughout much of the 1990s at various venues around town One recent trend has been young professionals moving into older housing complexes such as Parkview Manor or Northwood Place while still maintaining their cellphone service through their landlords . . .
