The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Lathrop, California in 1959. The deployment was in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the University of California at Berkeley. The university had donated land for the installation of an air force base. The gift was a total of $1 million and was given by Chancellor Robert Lovett. The gift consisted of three types of aircraft: A-3 Skyhawk fighter jets, C-130 Hercules transports, and E-2D Hawkeye airborne early warning and control systems. Each type delivered gifts to local businesses and families that lived near the airbase. The A-3 Skyhawks were used for training purposes only; they were not operational as combat planes. The C-130s were primarily used for cargo transport; however, one flew with an American flag on its tail to show that it was carrying humanitarian supplies from Baghdad during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The E-2Ds provided airborne early warning and control services essential for troops on ground missions; these planes also carried spare parts for other military aircraft.

The LA Air National Guard's 413th Airlift Wing, which operates the C-5 Galaxy transport plane, donated a $10,000 gift to the Lathrop Chamber of Commerce in November 2013. The donation was made in memory of 43-year-old Major Mark W. Hensley of Lancaster, California.
Lathrop is located in the Central Valley of California, about 20 miles east of Fresno and 30 miles north of San Francisco. The population was 7,817 at the 2000 census. Lathrop is a small town with a small school district, two churches, and one grocery store. The town began as an agricultural community in 1868 by George Hardshaw and his family. In 1879, Lathrop became the eastern terminus for the Central Pacific Railroad's line from Fresno to Stockton. The railroad abandoned its line in 1903, but left behind a number of improvements including a depot and three schools. Lathrop was first settled by German immigrants in 1853. By 1870, there were 10 families living in Lathrop; 11 of these had died by 1880. The first post office was established in 1875; it was called "Harding." In 1902, Lathrop incorporated as a city under the name of "Manchester." A fire destroyed most of Manchester on May 6th, 1902; however, due to the quick response from local citizens and firefighters (who included future Mayor John Cavanaugh), no one was killed or injured within minutes of the fire starting. A new city hall and library were built in 1905; they are still used today. In 1906-1907, Manchester annexed part of what is now Chico Municipal Utility District No. 3 (CMD #3). This annexation increased Manchester's population to around 25 people when it merged into Lathrop on January 1st 1907. On October 15th 1915notice was given for tenders for purchase by United States Army for use as civilian housing during World War I along with contracts for 1125 buildings which will be available at $2 per sq ft . These buildings will serve as barracks for American Troops stationed at Camp Roberts near Sacramento

In 1905, Lathrop incorporated as a city and renamed it after its founder. The population of Lathrop grew from about 100 people in 1880 to around 4,000 by 1915. During World War II, the town helped provide food for military personnel stationed in California and Nevada. After the war, Lathropy struggled to keep up with population growth and became a chronic financial disaster. In the 1970s, however, local officials began efforts to revitalize the town and attract new businesses and residents. Today, Lathrop is an important community located near Interstate 5 and Highway 395
