Lathrop, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,223 at the 2010 census. Lathrop is known for its ranches and ranching operations which include cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and burros. The community also has a small shopping center and two churches.
The United States Army deployed gift history in 1862 with the purchase of a cannon from Bohemia. The first cannons were brought to Fort Donelson, Tennessee in 1864 and used for artillery training. In 1865, the arsenal at Springfield, Massachusetts was built to store and arm the new cannons. This event is considered one of the beginning of American military gifts. In 1899, an army rifle was donated to Montenegro by President McKinley as a show of support for that country during World War I. From 1898-1902, the US Marine Corps contributed two small boats filled with marines (the USS San Francisco) to be stationed in Havana, Cuba as part of US policy towards Cuba during its Spanish Colonial period. Between 1903 and 1907, the US Navy contributed three submarines (USS Constitution-class), each measuring 159 feet long and 11 feet wide x 5 feet deep x 3 feet high, to be stationed off Guantanamo Bay in Cuba as part of US maritime policy towards Cuba during its Spanish Colonial period. Lathrop is a town in Kern County, California, located about 20 miles northwest of Bakersfield. The population was 2,503 at the 2000 census. Lathrop is named for Hiram Lathrop, an early settler and rancher in the area. The first white people to visit what is now Lathrop were probably horseback riders who followed the Pahrump River Valley in search of new grazing land during the 1850s. A store opened up in 1872 by Wm. Gorman and his brother-in-law James Irvine. In 1885, Jens Jensen bought some land east of town from Hiram Lathrop, making him one of the first citizens of Lathrop. In 1907, John Daugherty set up a post office here with mail service from Bakersfield. The post office moved to its present location in 1912 and became a general store which continued until it closed in 1984. The building still stands and is used as a museum today (see below). Lathrop had its first school when pioneer Sallie Capps built her home on the corner of Sixth Street and First Avenue in 1911/12. It was later moved to Seventh Street where it remained until 1915 when it was replaced by a frame structure known as "The School House" which burned down on October 1st 1918 while students were inside for their dinner bell ringing celebration according to one report; however another account says that no Explosion occured but due to arson there was extensive damage done both inside and outside this building also See photo above left taken just before fire took place - Notice all entrances have been destroyed completely including windows so there would be no way anyone could escape if needed) After three years of teaching children using homemade chalkboards with paper darlings thatched roofs they finally gave up around 1923 after giving birth to six children at once; this happened just before Earle Phelps came into town (See photo right) He ran an agricultural farm out near Canoga Park which soon produced enough crops that he decided against moving back eastward anymore SoEarle Phelps donated most or all of his holdings within about 10 miles or so east of here so that we can build our own Post Office & Store Here instead! + much more detailed history on page 4)
