The first people to live in what is now Lathrop were traders from Northern California who came to trade with the Mojave Desert for goods and animals during the 1849 Gold Rush. In 1864, John Sutter founded Sutter's Ranch in present-day Rancheria County, California and named it after his friend and investor George A. Smith (1814–81). The new settlers began to build homes and grow crops there, but they soon realized that they needed water for their irrigation systems. They petitioned members of the state Assembly for a tax on irrigated land in 1865 to help pay for boots to keep them from getting wet while farming in this dry environment. In 1886, Andrew Jenson established Jenson & Sons Waterproofing Company near Lathrop with a system of underground cisterns that supplying groundwater almost exclusively to residents in Lathrop through natural springs until about 1910 when pipes were built under Highway 395 into nearby Prunedale so that all water was piped here rather than trucked long distances like it had been before. During World War II much of what is now downtown Lathrop was developed as an airbase by Air Force pilots flying missions over Southern Californias during World War II including formation flying exercises over Stockton and Madera Valley on July 20th 1945 at 12:00pm PDT over suspected Japanese targets; these exercises led directly to the death or capture or destruction of many local civilians on August 8th 1945 when fighter planes attacked two small villages northwest of Stockton which resulted in heavy damage done both buildings within minutes due only 10 tons bombs falling on each house! It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located about 20 miles (30 km) east of San Jose. Lathrop was founded by George Lathrop in 1872 as a farming community on Rancho Rinconada land west of present-day Palo Alto. The name change came about due to competition from nearby Redwood City for the same water supply that would later be named Latham Creek. In 1906, Lathrop became an incorporated city when it annexed portions of unincorporated San Mateo County. In 1916, it celebrated its centennial with a celebration and parade led by Mayor John Fenton and other civic leaders. Lathrop experienced some heartbreaking events during World War II: On September 17, 1942, Japanese aircraft bombed and killed six people at Lathrop's high school; on December 4th, 1944, five residents were killed when their home was destroyed by fire; on February 24th 1945, twenty residents were killed when their local hospital burned down; on May 8th 1945 airstrikes hit the town while troops were being evacuated from Japan; and finally several days later Japanese military forces surrendered at Weldon Beach near Santa Clara after months of fighting
