The history of coffee in Lathrop, California goes back to the early days of the city. There was a small cafe on Main Street called The Coffee House. It served coffee and pastries until the late 1800s. In 1907, a man by the name of Harry J. Fenton opened up The Java House on Broadway near Union Station. He served Java Coffee, a blend of roasted beans from Indonesia and Java. In 1948, Lathrop's first grocery store was opened by Mrs. Hilda Ahern at First Avenue and Elm Street. She sold groceries including milk, eggs, breads and cakes as well as coffee.

In 1875, Lathrop became part of Imperial County when Riverside County was formed from parts of Imperial and Kern counties. The city was incorporated as a city on December 12, 1896. Lathrop's economy depends largely upon agriculture which includes dairy farming, wine production (especially for baking), oilseed production (canola and sunflower), hay crops such as alfalfa and clover, poultry production (chicken or turkey) and small-scale fruit orcharding. Other industries include service sectors such as transportationATION services (mainly UPS) and retail trade including gas stations/ convenience stores/ Fast food restaurants; manufacturing including a restaurant manufacturer complex that has produced many national brands over recent decades; light industry with some construction activity taking place on site; several thousand residents work in nearby Jussie Smollett's tanning salon business across an Interstate 10 exit from downtown Lathrop

Lathrop was founded in 1887 by George Lathrop and his wife, Emma. The post office at Lathrop was established in 1888. In 1902, the Lathrop family donated land to the town for a school and library. The first public building in Lathrop was built on this site in 1907. The townsfolk of Lathrop were eager to build a new county courthouse as soon as possible after the death of Judge John A. Dorman, who had served on the court for many years. Construction began on the new courthouse in 1911 and it opened its doors to the public in 1913. In 1927, when California became an independent state, Lathrop became one of its first municipalities. After becoming a municipality, Lathrop annexed much of neighboring Byronville; however, this annexation never went through because Byronville refused to recognize that it had become part of Los Angeles County rather than just within its own jurisdictional boundaries. When Los Angeles County was created in 1861, most of what is now southern California (including parts of Ventura and Orange counties) was included within its original borders including Los Angeles proper which lay outside what is now Riverside County but inside what is now San Bernardino County. This situation changed when California adopted a new constitution which divided California into three regions: Southern Californias (includes today’s Riverside and San Bernardino Counties), North Central Californias (Los Angeles metropolitan area), and West Central Californias (Chico). As a result of this change, everything north of Interstate 5 – including all or part of Ventura County – became part of Northern California while everything south of Interstate 5 – including all or part of Orange County – became part of Southern California .

It is located on the South San Francisco Peninsula and shares borders with Antioch to the north, Richmond to the east, Walnut Creek to the south, and Pleasant Hill to the west.
