Lathrop is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Kern and Tulare counties. The name Lathrop comes from James Sutherlin's 1878 rancho (land grant) called Rancho Los Nietos de la Mesa de Lathrop. In 1886, John Wesley Powell discovered gold in what became known as the San Joaquin Gold Rush and brought gold prospectors to Ione Valley in 1887; they found little gold but made valuable discoveries elsewhere including at Fillmore and Gaviota Mines where they developed a rich vein of silver. A post office was established at Lathrop in 1888, and mail was carried until 1905 when the first train depot opened at Bakersfield. In 1908, General Electric built a plant near Ione which produced radios and television receivers for the market. This industry took off during World War II with military spending spurring demand for new technology. After the war ended, GE closed its plant in 1951 and pulled out of California but kept production going here until 1984 when it closed its last factory outside Japan. In 1926 Congress created Grant County (including present-day Kern County) within Tulare County; Lathrop became part of Grant County because it had been annexed by Tulare Countysharing agreement between then-Governor Fielding Hancock and then-municipal president George Wickershams after granting land grants to both men as part of their plans for county organization within California.. The community grew rapidly following annexation with people moving into town from surrounding rural areas; by 1960 there were over 1,000 residents living in what is today Lathrop village center only six years after incorporation!
